Post  Wayne Tue Jan 11, 2011 10:43 pm

    Hello everyone.

First things first, my name is Wayne Zammit, I'm 31 years old and I'm a Software Engineer. My first contact with the world of scale models was at a very early age.
My grand parents had an abandoned pigeon loft on the roof of their house, brimming with old stuff. It was off limits to us kids but one summer day I managed to sneak up there. While rummaging through the junk I stumbled upon a number of model aircraft that my uncles had built many years before together with a LOT of old war comic books. I hurriedly ran down the stairs, excited with my find. I vaguely remember being scolded for disobeying but my dear old granny said I could keep the stuff Smile The aircraft included a Ju 88, He 111, Me 109 and a Hawker Tempest. They were dusty, chipped and had no propeller blades but I was fascinated by them.. they were my most precious toys Smile

My dad also owned a Toy Store in Valletta ("Brittania Store" - some of you might remember it) so I was lucky as I has access to paints and Airfix Models aplenty Smile Also, when dad closed the shop in the early nineties I picked most of the remaining kits we had in storage (most of which I still have today, unbuilt!)

By the time I finished secondary school Warhammer was just starting and I was hooked as well. I focused on building and painting a space marine army and set aside my aircraft projects.

As time passed though, mostly due to work and GF (now wife:)) I found I was modelling less and less until it ground to a complete halt. All my unfinished projects, paints, miniatures are currently in storage.

However, earlier this week I stumbled upon your website (I knew the club existed and that Maltese modellers were top notch) and I was literally blown away by the excellent work you guys make, especially scratch-builds.

I'm glad to say you re-ignited my passion for the hobby, although I must say I feel a bit out of date with the techniques/supplies available today and feel like a total newbie.

My main interest lies in Luftwaffe aircraft especially fighters, my favourite being the Me262 and Fw190.

I can't wait to set up my model station and get cracking once more.

Now where did I put that 1/32 Hasegawa Me 163??...

    Thanks!

I believe you guys meet on wednesday evenings right? Unfortunately it's the worst day of the week for me but I will definitely come over, hopefully soon. The good thing is that I work in Blata l-Bajda which is close to the club house so I can come straight after work:)

Sadly all my wings are gone... either destroyed by the evil feather duster, given away or lost in the sands of time. Besides I'd be embarrased to show them. I might bring one of my latest Warhammer 40K figures to give you guys an idea of what my skill level is and get some pointers from real masters.

But i'll definitely get back to building aircraft soon.

no worries, as you may see from the forum, we got all sort of modelling going on.....

and there is nothing wrong in showing your early models, you can only improve, and no-one will say anything to make you feel ashamed. All feedback given at the club is genuine and only intended to improve your skill.

    By the way...

Are their any sci-fi builders at the club? I also own a 1:350 kit of the Star Trek Enterprise NX01 and have no idea where to start on the paint job. I never got round to building it for fear of messing it up.

here's an image of the kit i found online:

Always a pleasure welcoming a new guy to our brethren...there are other clubs on the island but if u want to learn from the best of the best among local and international modellers...you have found the place to belong! Dont be shy to bring your old models or ones you are working on at the moment no matter your level...constructive criticism only makes you improve and if you are interested in german fighters well we have some excellent wingy gurus over here cheers
Wednesday has become a bad day for me too but i tell u that I miss the club meetings a great deal when i cant make it...and it always makes my modelling juices flow when i manage to get there and see the wealth of work the others are producing...

I've said too much! Welcome and DO get back to this great passion of modelling!

I just wanted to thank everyone for your warm welcome at the club today.

Hopefully next time i'll be able to stay longer Smile

In the meantime i'll try and get back up to speed with supplies, especially paints, as I'm quite sure that my old Humbrol enamels are no good any more scratch

Any suggestions on what I should invest in in terms of paints? My first project will most likely be a 1:32 Fw 190 (radial engine)

    Thanks

Personally I prefer Model Master (enamel paints) and whenever I can, I choose them. Humbrol aren't bad as well.

As regards paint accuracy, there are others who are more experts than myself, so I will leave it to them.

Wayne was nice meeting you yesterday.

As for paint it ends up to personal taste, nowadays we have the benefit to choose from enemels to acrylics.

The best brand for enemels remain Humbrol, Model Master [Testors] and Revell. Unfortunetly Humbrol lost a lot of the old excellent colours from their range so hold to them if you still have unopened tins. Many are diehards on enemels, so you get lots of help from the club.

Personally I opted for acrylics, but be prepared for challengeduring the process to understand their compound. I prefer Tamiya and Gunze Sangyo as these are not true acrylics but something in between ... they can be mixed with water but preferably with isoprop alcahol or lacquer. Next in line are Vallejo, Andrea and the excellent range of LifeColours ...

The luxury of acrylics is that these dry quicker, which sometimes can be an agent against you ...

So do some experiments with your airbrush and see what would be your prefered choice ...

Hi Wayne, i still try to use enamels as much as possible but the more time passes the more difficult it is to find them. They are getting slowly but steadily replaced by acrylics. I try to use model master and/or humbrol as much as possible. I cannot say that i like revell colours. They never worked well for me. However, i swear by their matt and gloss varnish and try to buy any tin of them i can lay my hands on. they are perfectly clear and will stand the test of time against yellowing unlike other varnishes. That is my opinion but i just definitely need to start experimenting with acrylics since enamels are on the way out and soon we will not be able to find any.

So... I took the plunge and bought a 1:48 Tamiya Fw190 A8/A8R2. The original plan was to go for a 1:32 but given my years of inactivity I decided to go for a cheaper kit just in case I screw it up Smile

Tomorrow I'll be checking my old paints to see what I can salvage and see what's missing. I'll also make a shopping list of supplies... masking tape, glues, pin vices, sand paper, modelling putty... the list is endless tongue

In the meantime I'm carefully reviewing the assembly instructions study, whetting my appetite.

The whole point of this project will be to get me back up to speed and find my footing again. The build will mostly be out of the box keeping it simple and focusing on technique, especially airbrush as I haven't used it in a while.

Anyways, I'll keep you posted with the progress

    Cheers

    W
