HMS INVINCIBLE 1982 Empty HMS INVINCIBLE 1982

Post  in nannu pec Sun Oct 31, 2010 6:35 pm

This is my next project converting the newly released 1/350 SCALE airfic HMS Illustrious kit to HMS Invicible during the Falklands war in 1982. Loads of modifications involving cutting, sawing adding a new Forecastle from scratch including the take of ski jump...it's a real challenge ...just to give you a rough idea....

    FROM THIS
    HMS INVINCIBLE 1982 Pictur10

    TO THIS

    HMS INVINCIBLE 1982 Pictur11

Just a short history...The first keel plates for the Invincible were laid at Barrow in Furness on the 20th July 1973. The Invicible entered the water in a very dull and wet day on Tuesday 3 May 1977.In March 1979 The Invincible was ready to undergo her sea trials. Incidentaly at that time the vessel was classed as an anti submarine cruiser and not an Aircraft carrier. The first reference to the ship as an aircraft carrier was made by the Prince of Wales in November 1979.. She arrived in Portsmouth on the 19th of March 1980 and was proclaimed as the first 'Harrier Carrier' by the First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Henry Leach who emphasized The proud day for the Royal Navy which started a new era in naval aviation.
The first Harrier from 800 Sqdrn Yeovilton landed on her deck on the 20th May 1980 and then left by Vertical take off. The ski jump was not to be used until the Autumn of 1980.Invincible's extensive sea trials and work up with sea harriers and Seakings began in late 1980.Minor incidents occurred including a crash by a sea harrier of 800 Sqdrn, but the pilot ejected safely.
801 Sqdrn took over operations from 800 sqdrn which were later joined by the Seaking 820 sqdrn from Culdrose.....
Monday 5th April 1982 Invincible steamed out of Portsmouth to the strains of Rod Stewart's 'Sailing' towards the South Atlantic . On Friday 16th April Invincible had Ascension Island in sight. On the 17th April all the Invincible's supersturcture was painted grey . The first contacts with the Argentene Air Force came on the 21st April.. The first britsh kill from Invicible came on Saturday 1st May with Flt Lt Barton on a sea harrier from 801 sqdrn. Sea Harriers from 809 Sqdrn later joined Hms Invicible till the end of the conflict when Hms Illustrious took over Invicible's presence at the Falklands.

Hope this is of some interest to you guys. Have already started works in the aft Hangar....got a long way to go yet SmileSmileSmile

Adrian.....Invincible used FS 1's sea harriers from 801 and 809 squadrons ...don't forget there was Hermes....yes there were a couple of GR3's for a while but never stationed on invincible ! been doing my research for the last two months from 3 different books....cd's and even newspapers ! and guys who were on the ship during the Conflict. Marco the Seakings stationed on this carrier were in RAF Blue grey !!!!!! so that's another problem solved got the info from a seaking techniciam who was on Invicible at that time....two different colours for sea harriers....extra dark sea grey for 801 sqdrn and medium sea grey for 809 squadron......

In my opinion, the FRS1 is the nicest & sexiest Harrier from the entire chain of harriers! Rolling Eyes Esp when painted Darkgray with white undersides.

Were any of the Invincible Harriers credited with a number of Argentinian Skyhawks kills or were those stationed on the Illustrious?

You are right in the fact that no Gr.3 were stationed on Invincible, with the exception of one when it was transported to Invincible for the trip back home Twisted Evil . The Gr.3 from 1(F) sqn, RAF, were flown to and operational from HMS Hermes or shore detachment later.

Regarding the number of Gr3 in the falklands, the term couple is a bit of an underestimation, as 16 Gr.3 were sent to the falklands. Of these 16,
2 had problems and never made it, returned to the Uk.
4 arrived too late for combat operational duties, and offload later to shore detachment
6 were delivered on the Atlantic Conveyor and luckily flown before the ship was hit by the exocet missile
4 made the flight directly from Ascension Island with Victor tankers, a flight of about 7 hours to HMS Hermes.

Although these GR.3 were fitted with sidewinder missiles, they were used only in ground attack role, releasing the Sea Harriers for interception duties.
3 Gr.3s were shot down and one damaged beyond repair in a landing.

p.s. - All the Harrier Gr.3/Sear Harrier FRS.1 lost in combat were shot down by ground fire/SAM, none were lost in air to air combat. 6 Sea Harriers were lost in combat and in accidents.

Whilst most of the argentinian fighters lost in air to air combat were shot down by Sea Harriers from 800 NAS HMS Hermes, the Sea Harriers from 801 NAS HMS Invincible have shot down fighters as well as some thing else like a canberra and a C-130.

    Sea Harrier XZ457 - 800 NAS HMS Hermes, 4 confirmed kills (2 skyhawks/2 daggers)

    Sea Harrier XZ451 - 801 NAS HMS Invicible, 3 confirmed kills (pucara/C-130/canberra)

Ivan, regarding the skyhawks, it seems that all were shot down by Sea Harriers from HMS Hermes (800 NAS). Still those from HMS Invicible did shoot down Mirages and Daggers.

p.s. - With the exception of a couple of aircraft, all Sea Harrier air - air kills were destroyed with sidewinders.

Sea Harriers lost during the falklands war.

Sea Harrier FRS.1 XZ450 800NAS, HMS Hermes - 4th May, hit and shoot down by radar controlled AAA over goose green, pilot sadly lost.

Sea Harrier FRS.1 XZ452 and XZ453 801NAS, HMS Invincible - 6 May, both lost during a CAP, collision suspected, both pilots lost

Sea Harrier FRS.1 ZA192 800NAS, HMS Hermes - 23rd May, crashed and exploded shortly after take off, pilot lost.

Sea Harrier FRS.1 ZA174 801NAS, HMS Invincible - 29th May,was ready to take off, slid off the deck due to heavy seas as carrier turned into the wind. Pilot ejected, rescued safely.

Sea Harrier FRS.1 ZA456 801NAS, HMS Invincible - 1st June, shot down by Roland SAM south of Port Stanley. Pilot ejected and rescued.

The Sea Harrier has been retired now for some years, and the second generation harriers service end is closing down.

With you starting work on the Invincible, you are an inspiration, and you have given me the right push to start the Sea Harrier/Harrier Gr.3 Falklands Laughing
