Messerschmitt Me209 V1/V4 Duo

Just finished these 2 models of the Me209 record breaker from Huma in 1:72.

The V1 has the short wing and was used successfully for speed record breaking purposes. It was finished in overall blue before it was taken for permanent exhibit at the Berlin Museum.

The V4 was converted as a fighter to succeed the Bf109 - an exercise which was not successful. It had longer wings, a larger tailfin, shorter undercarriage and armament. It was finished in fighter colours as a propaganda exercise. Published colour schemes show this aircraft in an overall Light Grey 63 scheme which is incorrect as photographs show it in a light mottle camouflage scheme and in a shade darker than 63. I have done my model in overall Light Blue 65 with Grey 02 / Dark Green 71 light mottle which is more in line with the colours in use at the time of the propaganda exercise.

These are very early models from Huma and need work to obtain a decent result. They are also very small - roughly the size of an index finger!

Yes, saw it in a store during a recent visit. It would be great if some kind of a restoration could be done!

And just a Short Description on the pilot...



Fritz Wendel born on the 21st of February 1915 died on the 9th of February 1975. Wendel was a German test pilot during the 1930s and 1940s. On 26 April 1939 Fritz Wendel set the world air speed record of 469.22 mph, flying the Messerschmitt Me 209 V1. He was also the first pilot to fly a liquid rocket airplane in the Me 209 as well as a jet engine powered airplane in the Heinkel He280. On 18 July 1942 in Leipheim near Günzburg, Germany, Wendel test flew the Messerschmitt Me 262. This flight was significant as it was conducted with jet engines (Junkers Jumo 003) for the first time.

Marco, when I visited Krakow Aviation Museum, the 209 was in a worse state than in your photo which means some work at restoring the fuselage has been done. The wings are not available so the restoration proably stops here. Pity, as this is a very nice little plane with a lot of character.

Very nice finish, and the subject is even more interesting as we rarely see models of German aircraft of the interwar period.

Nice to see the early birds and precessors of what had to come during WW2 ... the missing links that are nearly forgotten to commeners!

It would also be nice to see some Spanish Civil War colourful schemes ... much nicer then paper projects : )

Iv, there are a few ideas about Spanish Civil war subjects but not on the priority list. Sorry but paper projects retain a special interest for me and I consider them a section of history parallel to reality.

These little additions were a break from 3 Heinkel 177's which still await vac canopies but which do not seem to want to arrive. More about these later.

No Aldo keep them coming the paper projects... at least if you want a break from your normal aircraft projects ...you can enjoy building them......AIRCRAFT ....PAPER...PROJECTS........

Marco, as you correctly say, the paper projects are a welcome break after a build which takes a long time and effort to research properly. But I also include the one-offs in this genre and these two examples are such exercises of supposed 'unstressful' builds. If only Huma had done a better job with these two!

Yes Aldo, but still they are two interesting examples in the history of the 109 series ..keep them coming......

Great work Aldo, what a beautiful unusual subject and the schemes you chose are really great. i never realized that there was one in existence.

Thanks Brian, yes the V1 was an exhibit in the Berlin Museum which was destroyed by allied bombing. The remains were somehow 'acquired' by the Soviets after the occupation and eventually ended up in Krakow, Poland which in my humble opinion has one of the most approachable aviation museums in the world. I highly recommend both the beautiful city of Krakow and its fantastic aviation museum.

There are yet another two Me209s which are completely different from the V1 to the V4 range. These are the V5 and V6 which look like a cross between a Fw190D and a sporty version of the Bf109. Hopefully, these should join the built collection 'in due course'.

Germany hid part of the collection in the region of Poznan in occupied Poland, where he found them in the shed after the war. By harvest in Wroclaw damaged or incomplete aircraft went to Krakow. Under communism there was no chance to renovate it but a few Polish machines. Then the lack of money, very little was happening. Currently rebuilt Albatros B.II, Camel, Grigorievitsch G-5 and a few hulls.

Wow, thanks Jerzy! This piece of history was not known to me and when I visited the Krakow Museum, the staff were busy with preparations for a celebration of the anniversary of the PZL, and not very available with information.

Lovely models Aldo, and great pieces of info. You know me, I love anything Luftwaffe especially these little 'exotics'
