Sam GREAT figure believe me but you're gonna hate me for this Sad

The CROSS should be on the left breast (on the heart sort of.......don't tell me I DIDN'T TELL YOU TA) and it was not a Latin Cross AFAIK but a Cross potance or something like that..........hope Ivan would chime in and correct me and you accordingly Sad

    Cracking piece nonetheless cheers

First of all great piece Sammy, the red is brilliant though I do not like that almost 'black' deep shadow from under the belt till the end of the tunic on the right that looks too straight line IMO, but I am judging on the photos ...

So the issue of the cross, 'l-ghajjien' in that period should be potance cross [in simple 'man in street' words - cross with points at the edges but not the proper eight pointed Maltese cross yet].

Regarding position, let us be in the right side of history, to date there is no proof what, were and what size the cross was. The statute of the period only said that knight had to dress in a red field with a cross. On another note being a little artistic on the left will look nicer and it is in the vicinity of the hearth, and you now these were Knights and gave their blood for each infidel they sent to the other world ... If you want to play it safe you can also put it in the middle ... insomma an easy correction mate ... but would rather update it, especially coming from a Maltese going to a foreign competition !

Ah forgot - take off that blue lining from the belt, the statue instigated that rich items are forbid, their equipment had to be simple, no jewels, enemels, rich material or embroidery ... and swords were not gilded but made of iron!!!!!!!

    Prosit!

I cannot argue with the rest, especially Mr. Cocker who is really keen into history. Apart from the black line which i do nt like either, i think that it is brilliant. I like it but i am an aircraft builder.

Just to continue on yesterday's club discussions, and how nit picking we history buffs we might be, eh!!!!

The hilts of combat swords were mainly made of iron, and somethimes one can also find 'yellow coloured' metal handles, that look like brass but not gilded in gold.
I am not an expert of metal work but probbaly this was the result of some alloy mixed with iron that produced this colour. In renaissance and after, we had also the introduction of a blue coated metal, this was a result of another mix, tempered on fire acheiving a bluish patina to metal ...

Gilded swords and also handles made of golds, one can still find but these were meant for ceremonial use only.

During the early period of the Crusades, the Hospitaller Order was very strict on their monastic rule, of obedience, poverty and castity. During the early period, though most of the Knights came from rich noble families, were forbid to have rich items, including rich textiles, furs, enemeled belts, jewelry and ornamental weapons and any of items they brought with them was handed to the treaseaurer.

After the Crusades in the Holy Lands, seems that these ideas to have been 'put aside' and as the Order grew richer and richer, and the best families enroling their proud sons in seems these ideas of poverty and castity starting to be 'played around'. Especially from the renaissance onwards we can see that the best and richest material for warefare and arts were the new face of the Order. This what made the Order a 'super power' of the time and thanks to that Malta has benefited with the richest legacy and patrimony left by these proud aristocrats. Just visiting the Palace Armoury, the frescoes and the riches in St John co-Cathedral is the testimony of what I am saying, comparing to basic structure of Crack de Chavalier in Jordon ...

Forgot also to mention another factor during the crusades in the Holy Land, the Order forbid shaving of beards, till date how these laws were implored for how long these were kept now one really have gone in depth till date ...

But you are forgiven for this Sammy!

http://www.seiyaku.com/customs/crosses/maltese.html the cross stated Pattee is a good strat of, use also Ray's workl as reference ... over planetfigure I rather do not comment anymore on historical issues, first as many big heads think they can do what they like especially Crusading period as we lack referance etc and many more feel not to comment as might they hurt someone. Once on the older HM Forum I had highlighted this cross issue on a much earlier period figure, I recall he had a red cappae [never heard of], a black mantle with a redcross and a shield red with an eight pointed cross. Heq ma flahx and pointed out these mistakes, I got bashed back as it was a well painted figure and the worst thing was that the painter told me that he liked it that he liked it that way ... so why I waste time with these kind of people! One day I gonna paint Napoleon with a pink coat and see what they say and say that for art sake I wanted him that way ... unfortunetly certain forums what we read is Wow, Good, Awesome ... and the usual thumbs up, I understand that here as we have always been in SSM would be a different story!

To bad for St Vincent, it was the best Italian show, but might be a good occasion for us to start thinking to advertise History in Scale as an international show + tourism ... we need to start planning ahead and this is the right time!
