Here is Trumpeter's Shenyang F-8II (as the one that collided with an EP-3E in the South China sea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUp_jX17ZIE), without any modifications. It is sprayed in automotive Trimite White (old thinner paint), from the no.2 needle and nozzle of a Paasche VSR-90. Thinned down at about 1/3 paint and 2/3 thinner it sprayed without too much problems. Only problem is that a bit came off with the masking on the starboard side of the fin, will have to touch it up. Exhaust is a combination of Alclads directly on the plastic.

I like all planes, even the uglier ones! If it flies, it has achieved the goal of one of man's greatest dreams!

A little more progress on this one: decals applied, now another coat of varnish and then weathering.

Today I added the undercarriage after finishing off the weathering and clear varnish a couple of days ago, BUT on removing the masking from the canopy, a lot of flaking paint came off with the masking!! I will now have to carefully remask and touch up the canopy area, and try to remove the masking quicker, maybe the paint will not have enough time to become brittle. There are also some painting touches to complete it like the pitot tube and adding the missiles, but I will have to tackle the canopy problem first. I am very satisfied with the weathering around the fin and exhaust area, but maybe the front part should be less weathered then it is.

That looks great!! About the flaking problem, I found that passing lighting with a new blade around the edges of the tape before removing it will greatly reduce the chances of paint flaking off with the tape.

Trumpeter F-8II Empty What masking tape tape are you using?

Post  Dottore Sat Mar 09, 2013 12:00 am

I think Tamiya masking tape (habiki) should be low tak and though expensive in my opinion is the best for paint jobs...

    Just my two cents...

I still haven't attempted to repair the paint around the canopy. I hope that I don't mess up there, and ruin the whole model now. The automotive paint does not adhere well to plastic, even though I tried priming with a little grey before.

Touched up the canopy framing with 00 brush freehandly, but there are some edges where the paint flakes went off. I will try to sand it down a little bit and brush it up again to smooth the finish. Not the best I had hoped for, but better than it was! The canopy isn't very clear also, I might have made a few scratches on it. I'll try to bring it tomorrow even though it's not finished yet.
