Coats and layers Empty Coats and layers

    Post  Maxi_Model Thu Apr 18, 2013 2:22 pm

    Hi everyone,

I have not disappeared from this forum, but lately I reduced my hours on modelling because of health issues, though still doing small things.

I would kindly need some help about what type of lacquere do I need to apply in between layers. I have a model which I acrylic painted, now before I start applying weathering (assuming enamels and oils), should I apply a layer of acrylic gloss or semi matt/gloss ? if so which brand do you recommend?

    Thanks.

Some of us were discussing this very subject yesterday at the clubhouse and 2 coats of Alclad Aqua Gloss Clear seems to work for some. I still have to try it though.

Since this post I have also received other tips and some suggersted that Tamiya Clear is also a good clear to use.

Where can I find this Alclad Acqua clear from? I would also like to know where I can find a good range of Tamiya paints from (locally)

    Thanks

K-Hobbies stock Alclad products and Model Shop stock Tamiya. K-hobbies might also have Tamiya paints but I'm not sure.

Locally you get Vallejo and Humbrol from K Hobbies the full range. Alclad they get too not sure if all the range. I find Tamiya Clear which is a gloss coat very good mixed with isoprop alcohol or lacquer thinners. They also have a ready mixed semi Matt and Matt coat nowadays but tamiya paints have to be sent for from abroad. Model shop only has some odd Tamiya jars (tilqit). Model shop stock ModelMaster enamel range but I don't like their varnishes for protective coats. Some swear with Vallejo varnishes marketed as ready to spray ModelAir but I don't like them much. You get gloss, satin and varnish. Others like to use varnishes from the can, like the much used Purity Seal from Games Workshop. Never tried it but I heard its good.

    Hope this helps.

PS if you need something urgently I have pretty much all of the above....
PPS Humbrol have just released a clear coat which apparently is superb for sheen and gloss.

Thanks for all your help and hints.

I called Model Shop and his stock is very low, he almost has nothing and No varnishes of Tamiya.

I went to K-Hobbies and found a large range of paints and after thinking for some time, I went for the acrylic Alclad Acqua Gloss, I applied it today so I still have to see how it is. so far it looks good, cause it dries to touch after a couple of hours and its also ready to use from the 120 ml jar. I was offered the Alclad Gloss but since they are not acrylic, I was still a little scared of having trouble with them when I was going to apply enamel washes on it and weathering with oils and enamels.

I already had some bad experiences using enamel varnishes and then applying washes (with white spirit) and oils on it.

    Thanks again

It all depends which acrylics one uses, personally I try to avoid varnishes as much as possible. Purity Seal by games workshop is very good but make smooth coats and wait to dry or it would white cloud and there is no turning back. Tamiya Clear is good to mix during painting aswell, but again this has to be purchased from abroad.

Has been using acrylics for ages now [preferably Tamiya] and never had issues with washes and weathering [oil enemel based] damaging the base coats. When I wished to use varnishes I prefered satin due to give that extra sheen to metal objects, but this is just a matter of taste and not for protection.

So far the Alclad Aqua Gloss looks good, I will be posting some results soon.

These are some trials I was doing over the Alclad Aqua Gloss, on some I even used sand paper to test its durability
