This Japanese modeler has an interesting way of making a pretty convincing diorama that would cost very little.  It's in Japanese, so I just turn the volume down and the radio on.

This is from a show that is on Japanese television where they follow a different modeler as he builds the model mostly out of the box and then puts it on a base with a usually interesting background like this one.  Most of the bases are usually mostly scratch built and some innovative ideas.

I think it is pretty good and i love his technique, you can virtually create any scene out of practically nothing and it looks good, don;t like the figure painting but the rest is ok.

I agree with you on the figure painting, any of the figures I have seen them do did not look realistic at all. Most of their builds are generally out-of-the-box although sometimes they motorize airplanes. I assume the show is aimed at newer modelers or getting people into the hobby? But then they have their dioramas which are usually scratch built and can be pretty innovative. A couple of the ship models have been detailed with some pretty amazing dioramas.

Here's a good one, the guy does a nice job on a trolley car and then does a pretty amazing diorama of a real place.
