Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs Empty Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs

Post  Aldo Thu Mar 19, 2015 11:16 pm

Finally finished after over a year of on and off modelling for more reasons than one...

These are two versions of the Dornier Do26 in 1/72 by Mach 2.  Needless to say, once the million and a half corrections were made to this disastrous model, a new and much more correct  version was issued by AModel!  This is what modelling is all about.

The models are veritable dogs!  They are incorrect in many areas and correction is time consuming and arduous.  I know, I did all of it, TWICE!

The civil version is the V2 and the military version is the fifth production aircraft known as a Do26D.

First the V-2 in civil markings:

    Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs V2-111

    Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs V2-210

    Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs V2-310

    Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs V2-410

The Do26 D in service colours:

    Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs Do26d_10

    Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs Do26d_11

    Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs Do26d_12

    Dornier Do26 - A Tale of Two Dogs Do26d_13

No more boats for a while...

The hard work paid off Aldo as they look great. It's a really elegant aircraft too.

Thanks Wayne - Elegant they are as the Do26 was possibly one of the most streamlined designs in boats but modelling them brought out the worst in me. Everything connected with their build went wrong even the most stupid thing including posting this in the wrong forum! This should not be in 'Works in Progress
' but in the 'Finished Models' section. Can this be shifted to the correct place?

There must me a bad spirit connected with this model as the reviews of the new AModel kit are also not as complimentary as I expected. Mine are Mach 2 - just ask Brian who also built 2 models together and I will rest my case.

Yes, the A-Model kit has it's own set of problems from what I read (I was tempted after I saw yours) and the kits are not cheap at €53 a piece. Pity because it's such a lovely aircraft.

I know what kind of crap you have encountered and i can tell you that you really came through with flying colours. they are really beautiful. Don't know which one i prefer, they are both so nice and elegant.

Joking apart, think of this as a four engined flying boat - it is quite large actually.

Thanks Brian. The elegance is thanks to Dornier not me and definitely not Mach 2. It is a big model with big mistakes like wrong shape wings, wrong gull wing angles, wrong back engines, wrong exhaust positions, wrong surface detail and the worst kind of plastic which keeps developing warts and holes all over in spite of priming 3 times over. In the end, you get so sick of it, you can't decide whether to bin it or finish it as is.

Why am I telling you this?! You made two delicate examples yourself and probably experienced similar little challenges yourself!

    Thanks Gordon, Cyril and Marco!

Marco, I thought you would be particularly excited about this one as it is possibly the most elegant aircraft ever designed for sea travel. I was not very enthusiastic about the civil version at first but I agree with you, in the end, I preferred it to the military version.

    Thanks Steve!

Was more looking forward to the military one during the build but the civil one does attract more attention I must admit. ...and it is a large bugger so there is quite a bit of yellow there.
