Here is the start of this project.  The kits are the old Hasegawa and they sure show their age.  First step detailing the cockpit of one of the little monsters!  The rear bulkhead was too thick and inaccurate to correct so i decided to go the scratch way and rebuild it.  Most of the work was done in sheet aluminium.  The new head rest is resin block. The two openings to the left and right side of the headrest are window frames.  They still need the clear pieces of course.

Sublime work as always Bri  cheers

Why swap plastic sheet for sheet aluminium for the bulkhead if I may ask  Shocked ? I mean isn't it "harder" to cut thru than plastic  Shocked ?

Yes don't you think .1 sheet plastic is easier to work with?

first of all thanks for the comments. The kit bulkhead was way too thick and i wanted something much thinner. In fact i used the kit part to make the armour plating under the headrest,(the grey part). I was going to use plastic but for the thickness i wanted it was too flimsy. Besides, i needed to make those small windows at the sides and it is better to use aluminium because it is tougher and allows for sanding and filing to get them correct whilst retaining some strength. So that is why i worked with aluminium. It is still strong even when it is thin and allows you to work without breaking.

It might also help to create subtle weathering effects after painting ... WATCHING THIS PROJECT CLOSELY Wink

You have reason to sell Bri  Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Didn't realize you were after such thinness of a bulkhead  Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Definitely aluminium sheeting is much more durable & takes LOTS of punishment while still standing its ground  cheers

But you haven't seen the MENG offering donnok hux Wayne ... this Chinese company is making the old hags good just for recycling or else for extreme jobs like Brian is doing ... so for just a painted easy build I rather go for MENG, for what Brian has in mind these are good ...

I have a stash of old models which i will not throw away. That is a part of modeling, the challenge of doing anything necessary to a kit to bring it up to standard and make it as good as a modern offering. If i just went for the latest stuff, i would have to discard all the models i have but my motto is to fix an old model till it is as good as the new ones. It takes work but it can be done. The overall shape and detail of these old me 163's is correct, it is in the detailing that they suffer so that is no problem, just add the detail.

Believe me I saw them Ivan, I was hunting for one in Telford but it wasn't available in the UK at the time.

It looks like a great kit and will definitely find its place in my stash one of these days  Very Happy

But Kudos to Brian  Cool  who is yet-again building a master piece from a difficult kit.  It's very easy to put aside these classics and go for the new offerings but there's nothing like the challenge of scratch-building your way to a great model.

    Go Brian Go  Very Happy

I know the feeling on this Brian and Wayne, been there and have done it myself and then get a company coming up with a new 'perfect' model, BUT when considering a painted model display job [those called straight from the kit as if I ever have done one with no additions], nowadays I feel useless trying to solve an old hag, correcting all the mistakes and the rush the paint job. This project is different as it is meant for something else ... that is my CREDO, depends the final project what is need for ... and tiem frame aswell Smile

Everything is scratchbuilt. The fuel tanks were painted with some tar like substance, very rough. i tried to achieve that effect by painting them with thick paint, brush applied. Looks ok! the rear bulkhead is finally done. i will start the floor and then the side detail.

Thanks guys, but the madness is just beginning. It took me all Friday evening and Saturday afternoon to make those 18 fasteners for the tank strapping. I will open up every possible openable panel on this one. The fun is just beginning!!
