    Macchi C.205 - 1:48 Tauro Model

Post  Wayne on Sun Aug 09, 2015 8:53 am

Given the current anti-airbrushing weather we're having I put my current projects on hold and started some construction on this 1:48 C.205.

The kit is bursting with detail and appears accurate, however the quality of the plastic and moulding leaves a lot to be desired.. lots of flash and general bad fit.

However I still believe that with some TLC it can still end up as a decent model.

    Here's progress so far:

    Today's progress...

The other side of the office is detailed

Engine mount supports added and started plumbing

A lot of DB605 Engine guts show through the wheel wells so most of this will have to be added:

Yes... lots of fun Very Happy

Only one thing bothering me... not exactly sure where all the plumbing goes as I do not have a reference photo of the underside of the engine... a lot of guess work.

It is also very cramped and I'm still not sure how I'm going to assemble it all...

    Brilliant Skyhigh,

I didn't have many of these pics.

An interesting thing I noticed is the firewall.. on most of the images I found (as well as the ones you posted) the firewall has no holes between the ribbing at the bottom, but the model has them. I have found a picture (not sure about the source) where these holes are present but I'm not sure whether the aircraft is a C202 or a C205

My guess is its from a C.202 which would be a pity as the holes would make the model more interesting.

Also, I read on StormoMagazine that the interior of Italian Aircraft was painted in Light Grey (Grigio Azzurro Chiaro) from 1942 onwards meaning that this would apply to the 205. However may of these photos show the interior painted in Green, probably because most of the surviving C.205s were built by salvaging parts from 202s (apparently no complete original 205s survive today).

My gut feeling tells me to go with grey.... any Ideas?

I did... and I found around 55 pictures from various sources but somehow you still manage to come up with something I missed Very Happy

Besides, as I said earlier, there are no original 205s left today... all of them are hybrids so a walk-around photo could be misleading.

    Great choice Wayne Twisted Evil

I'm sure once it starts to get busy, NO ONE would really notice where all that wiring is coming & going from & to wherever, NOT EVEN Marco the Magnificent cheers

He would be looking & scrutinising yes for sure & seeming that he's knowing it all, but NO...NO WAY Shocked

Fantastic work Wayne, as i told you before you need to work in layers. Check out the reference pics thoroughly and then just start from the layers of wiring and plumbing closest to the engine and work your way up to the surface. You might also need to paint before as you go along because if the engine is very complicated you might encounter difficulties in painting all the detail at a later stage.

    Yes Brian,

I took your advise to heart and did just that. However I also prepped the larger pipes to see how much room they would take and therefore what room was left for the rest of the detail.
    will
And you are definitely right about painting, once I get all the dry fitting out of the way (at least for the larger bits) I will start painting the firewall and engine and add the rest of the detail step by step.

Yesterday was all about adding detail to the engine:

    DISCLAIMER Very Happy

In the following images you will see some horrid flash on the exhaust stacks. I cleaned as much as I could off the sprue but given their small size I could not completely finish them off once they were off the sprue. So I glued them to the engine block and they will be sanded down once the glue is fully cured.

First off the Air compressor was slightly modified

Adding plumbing to the reduction gear area

Next the crank case cover. I first tried to add the bolts individually by cutting them from thin plastic strips but they ended up being too uneven. I then remembered a trick Brian had explained to me last Wednesday...

I cut an aluminium strip to size and using a rivet punch I added small impressions to the sheet (without actually punching through). Here's the end result

Voila.. raised rivets/bolts... Thanks Brian for this TOP TIP Like a Star @ heaven

I also retro-fitted some more wiring to the engine.

You're doing a magnificent job on a very mediocre kit. Well done, keep it up. Engine detail looks really great. Saw it first hand and i know it is really good.
