Work on the Gun port access panels:

The larger air scoop on the Port access panel was fashioned using the soft metallic material from an old cream tube. I wrapped a strip of this around the kit's access panel to use it as a mould and shaped the metal with the aid of a sculpting tool:

Here's the scoop after it was cut out

And here it is mated to the panel

The rest of the smaller air scoops were made out of the stiffer aluminium sheet and shaping them over a half-round needle file.

Here's a picture showing a test-dry fit of the engine.

Aligning everything is going to be a royal pain... if the engine is aligned to the mounts, the exhaust stacks will not align with the fuselage. Also, the supercharger is not clearing the port engine mount so that needs to be fixed too.

As for the engine itself it's basically done, however I need to figure out what to do with the moulded wiring detail that you can see in the above picture. I have yet to come across a picture of a DB 605 engine that shows this wiring. I will probably be shaving this off and if I find a reference photo that shows it, I will scratch build it... at least it will match the rest of the detail.

Wayne excellent work. Just one thing about the scoops you are doing on the panel. If they were punched out of the panel material during manufacture then the ones you made are not good. they look like individual ventilators stuck onto the panel. In that case you would need to make an impression from behind like you did with the rivets. You cannot have a raised panel with the scoop in it. Check your references.

I see what you mean Brian and I agree. I tried making the panels by 'impressing' the kit parts onto soft aluminium but I wasn't happy with the result, especially on the vents.

I was planning to sand down the scoops as much as possible (once the superglue is fully cured) and smooth out any remaining lines with putty, but yes, I cannot afford to leave those lines visible on the finished model.

I found some schematics from the original maintenance manuals of the mass of guts that sits around the engine.

    First the engine coolant tank:

And here's my implementation so far:

There are a couple of more pipes to go.

Next will be the Oil plumbing... an even bigger mess...

At least I can follow these better than the photos Very Happy

Amazing work Wayne, no mean feat in 48th scale. My engines are way bigger and so way easier, you're doing excellent work, way to go!

Tackling the oil lines starting from the tank:

And test fitting to firewall, making sure lines clear the engine mounts properly

    Slow progress at this stage

    Progress on the Oil plumbing...

I will now probably start painting the engine bay and the engine itself and start installing these bits one by one. I can only match up the pipes with the engine once this is firmly installed so off to the spray booth...

    Back to the cockpit.

    Test fitting the bulkhead

Some moulded detail needed to go...

    ...and replaced

I need to work on the instrument panel next but since the part supplied with the kit is flat and bare, I sent for some photo etched instrument bezels.

I will also be sending for some brass barrels and jackets for the Breda Machine guns as the kit items are unusable.

So until the postman comes I'll turn my attention to painting the engine and ancillaries.

I was test fitting the cockpit floor to the fuselage and something about the seat mounting point caught my eye... I test fitted the seat and it hit me like a ton of bricks....

Believe it or not but the mounts supplied with the kit (part of the cockpit floor) would place the seat a full 1cm further back than it should be, practically into the fuselage!

I hacked them off and scratch built my own frame:

The arrow in the next image shows the original position of the seat. As it is now, the back of the seat is perfectly aligned with the head rest (on the fuselage halves).
