An Elephants desperate fight! Empty An Elephants desperate fight!

Post  Guest Sat Aug 15, 2009 6:55 pm

Here is my WIP Elephant tank by Dragon. Originally was to be set during the battle of Kursk, but
as i found out, this one has a bow MG. Which was not installed on those Elephants during Kursk.
So this is sometime after, maybe Poland. Anyway my first atempt at a derailed track just didn't
seem right, so i had to completely redo it, and the ground as well.

Now i've been weathering the tank with oils mostly, and some pastels (need to try Mig pigments someday)
but i think it needs more of something here. I have thrown dirt up on it from ground explosions.
I did not do a filter system on it, should i try?

So any suggestions at this point would be helpful.

Another fine piece of work. Is that the latest Dragon Elefant with Zimmerit? Looks like a very good kit.

    Thanks for sharing

    Excellent!

I like the idea of the diorama. I also like the shell impacts... very realistic!

I look forward to see more progress on this

Luft, I really like the composition of the KO Elefant, though the diorama give me more an impression of a Kursk ambience, might be the trenches idea ... if placing the tank in Poland I do not see it the best place IMO, in Poland the Germans were the ones retreating and trying to create a defencive line, on the other hand Italy which was another place that the Elephant saw action might play the part more ... the idea of trenches and defencive lines might look appropriate for the Gustav Line etc ...

Keep them coming ... love your diorama style!

Regarding Filters yes start using them it would tie the camo more. Also check out MIGs pigments these are an improvement on pastels and are state of the art material for weathering, you can do anything from dust to mud etc ... The shell impacts are really good I like them but might the silver inside be toned down with a filter and some washes ...

Yes this is the new-old Dragon kit with Zimm, they have taken an older kit and updated it.
Unfortumatly they didn't plan well for the aluminum barrel, it doesn't fit well at all and even
after using super glue it has become loose, oh well.

Luft, lufttiger, works for now, i guess i just don't want too much info on the net about me,
but somehow people always figure it out.

Ivan, do you think it is still possible to do a filter wash after i have already applied pastels?

Much thanks for your encouragement, Noel, Alex, Dottore, Joseph & Tancred.

Yes i do agree with Ivan about my layout, it can't be Kursk (bow gun), not really the right
type of ground for Poland. Maybe Italy, but i have planned to throw in some Russian Figs.

How about a counter attack in the fall of 43?

Hmmm if already you have pastels probably with the filters these shall dissolve and you might have a muddy effect, if I were you and pastels are not fixed I try to take off as much as possible from the hull and give the whole tank some filters then when satisfied with the results and dry put again the pastels were required ...

Not sure if in Fall 43 the Elephant was out already, probably the Ferdinand was but on the other hand it might still be in Russia in the 44 period when they started the big push, could be an 'elephant hunting party' by the Russians [might you use minendogs], an idea I always had in my mind for some time ...

    Hope it helps ...

Should try the Ju-88 for fit Shocked Really like your ideas and work. And the more I see, the more I am getting tempted to start building some AFVs again - maybe I need a break from aircraft Smile (haven't build a tank in 11 years, started but not finished). Keep posting.

Boy Ivan you sure do know your history, mine dogs, great idea, unfortunatly for the Russians it back fired on them.
Yet i really like that idea alot, it would add alot to the story, hmmmmm, where to find a dog willing enough Smile

FJ, i take breaks too from armor, this year i did an E-boat, and plan on the new Dragon Ta 152 soon.
    Try it, you'll like it.

Thanks Luft, I am in love with strange incidents in history!

Yep it was a horrible invension and seems the Russians did not realise that dogs go back to their owners when treatened ... Surprised

I think it would add interest, seems Zvezda are coming to your rescue as they are planning one of the hunters with his poor dog as a future release, apart that you can rely to a Historex dog or Andrea Miniatures. Some years ago for Euromilitaire Per Olav Lund made a very interesting dio with these hounds ... he used the Andrea wolfs converted a bit ...

    Keep them coming!

Started on the figs for this, i did post this in the fig section as well only because i'm a little fustrated with
working with Vallejo paints, in the pics here his uniform looks a bit blue, most likely due to the flash. But
in person its not bad, this is Vallejo 085 German uniform. In the past i used Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey or
RLM Grey. Unfortunatly Tamiya doen't brush on well at all, thus i'm trying Vallejo now.

Well, i know its been awhile my friends, it's summer here so much work to do outside before winter, has
slowed my building down a bit. Basically it's all done until i can find some Russian soldiers that will work
with this story. So here it is, but i will do better pics later when i find those Russkies!
