Ive always strayed away from polished metal finishes mainly because i have no idea how they are done. ive done research but im still quite lost. and many tutorials mention paint ranges we do not have in malta. now theres an old thunderbird model i want to do wich has this finish, but can anyone tell me how to achieve this finish?? is it simply done by using metalizers? do you need to buff or polish them? :s im guessing its not just silver paint... can you achieve it with the revell paints range? Question

    This type of finish-

    Hi Adrian....

A while ago Charlie aka Bumba&Devil managed an impeccable bare metal finish on a 1/24th P-51 Mustang.

He used aluminium foil (the same one your mum uses in the kitchen Twisted Evil ) so if any of the Wing Nuts like Marco can chime in, they'll fill you up perfectly as to how because that is all I know Sad

Hehe yes ive heard of the unusual delicate technique! but id rather go for spraying rather than gluing foil tongue

i cant understand...are metalizers like metalic paints or no? :s ive also read that model master metalizers are very delicate and sensitive to touch :/ and their clear coat sucks too..

Tony of KHobbies stocked ALCLAD Metalic paint. Probably these are teh best metallic effects with paint, I think they only need a black undercoat and you can start working of by airbrush. The range is quite nice with certain mettalic tones that can give the effect of 'burnt', bluish and weathered metal.

I was speaking to guys who are into carmodelling and they have been using these quite successfully for some time. As it is a USA product was a bit hard to get them locally due to some properties in teh paint ... but seems now there are EU stockist for ... go for it mate!

Ok thank you! Do these need to be 'buffed'? or are they non buffing?

Hi Adrian, i suggest that you try using metallizer paints from testors. you just spray them onto the model, wait for them to dry and buff them with a soft cloth. Alclad is meant to be really good but i have never tried it out. Try the metallizer paints. When you are done buffing, spray the finish with REVELL gloss varnish. DO NOT USE the sealer that comes with the paints. It will ruin the finish completely. you need to seal in the finish becasue the metallizer is delicate and will come off with handling. there are also various shades for obtaining a panel effect.

Haha ive just remembered... i have a testors gun metal metalizer which i got 2 yrs ago to try out when i was a 'brush modeller' which i immediatly put away because it was impossible to use with a brush (very watery, it stank & got absorbed by plastic instantly)! so i threw it in my 'empty tinlet pile' and bought the proper gun metal paint... Wink Rolling Eyes

Now that i have an a.b i hope to try it out... only i have no plastic to try it on Sad

Adrian Alclad is much different then any metalizer around, less messy as ready from bottle and pigments in it much smoother ...

I think you have alreday a good choice of mixes, you might also do some oil filters and washes to alter further panels ...
