    Hi,

I'm sitting at home with a friend and talking about modeling (hes not into modeling, more of a art guy).

And he asked the question, "Why don't you guys do a big diorama?" and the discussion continued from there on.

It would be a good idea to do a big diorama for HIS 2011 on the scale of 5x5 meters picturing the landing on Normandie.
The thought here is that the AFV guys builds the tanks, the figurine guys do the figures, the flyboys do the aircrafts and Louis do the ships.

What do you all think about this?

It doesn't have to be D-Day, it can be anything.. as you write, the defence of Malta.. but something that we do as a group, as the proud IPMS Malta as we are!

I think it is too late in the day for something like that. When we tried it, it did not work out. i had painted a whole box of tiny figures at the time but nothing came of it. So if we have to prepare a group effort, it has to be something which includes models we have already built and maybe just put them together with some terrain or something on those lines. But lovely as the idea may be, it is too late in the day. I am speaking for myself but with the restricted modeling time, it is impossible to achieve much in just one month.

A friend of mine has a collection of 17000 25mm Napoleonic figures.and yesterday I asked him if he's interested in displaying the figures so I suggested that as he has all the figures present at waterloo maybe 3000(in scale) I can set up my wargames terrain that's 16ft by 6ft as the Battle of Waterloo and lay out the Armies as they were on that fatefull day at 11 in the morning.Everything's available if there's space.

If I am not mistaken a few years ago we started a Group build of Fort St. Elmo but it sort of fizzled out. I think the Waterloo display would be very interesting.

Though group builds sound cool, I personally do not feel that they ever materialise if there are no dedicated group who instigate the project, willing that those core few will take the brunt of 70% of the work [probably more]. Another thing is to look ahead and see what is gonna happen to this project after the expo is over, shall this be dismantled, placed in a museum or just KO!

On the other hand what might work out is a thematic display and not difficult to ptoduce ... let us say Luftwaffe fighters 1944-45, the Spitfire, Malta Camo, Shermans ... etc etc. I think likewise it is more probably that the idea materialise, many would have already done models and with just a little of an effort a thematic display/s can be done.

Our last group display was Birgu by Candle Light a few years agao, we just used some sand in form of the Maltese isles, Sicily and N.Africa nad placed aircraft and afvs according to location and history. Just some small captions and dates ... and viola with just few hours of work we manged to set up an atractive display with what we had in hand ...

Before we jump into conclusion regarding display and majestic layouts, keep in mind that space is an issue. So please specify dimension so that when we plan layout we see if this idea is feasable or not.

Next year we might be having the new hangar so I guess we can plan something big ... keep in mind that 2015 God wills it shall be the Great Siege Anniversary and also Waterloo, both battles changed events in Europe, so we can plan something ahead ... and still have some time to think about it!

I have a mind full of ideas.

Why not try to do a "circle" consisting of quarters, each depicting a era of Malta... Starting with the Knights of St John (they were the first ones right?) and ending with the Britts leaving the island.. each piece of the cake representing century. Heck, why not check with the official tourist board of Malta to hear if we can get sell it to them?

I might be having to big ideas, if so.. just tell me and I'll shut up Very Happy

Nice one Tiny lol! lol! lol! lol! lol! lol! lol!

No keep it up Viking.......projects do not materialise if we don't speak up after all. But as Ivan said, we must/have to see what will happen after the project is done, plus with everyone's BUSY agendas (most of the members have kids) it is virtually impossible to get a spontaneous project. However if we plan ahead like Ivan said for the 2015 Anniversaries, we might GAIN something for the club after all cheers

I agree with David to set up the Waterloo diorama this year.

As for Tiny's suggestion............ although we have tried in the past but did not manage to deliver, I still say we should discuss more about it and see what we can manage.

    Further ideas for 2011
    A) Set a theme about Malta. AFV geeks do a diorama with a Malta scene Individually. Figure geeks can paint the politicians or Knights, Aircraft wings geeks on the same lines.
    B) A table in the centre of the exhibition will hold all these art pieces related to Malta and each will have a caption with a brief history.
    C) Like this we can all concentrate on our own personal project

All very positive ideas BUT I guess in just about a months time we surely can't deliver NEW models to justify SSM standards.

What might be interesting is that we set up some kind of display with what we have already. David's proposal as it is ready is already an asset, so we surely try to find an ideal loaction to put it up. I propose as well if we can set up some kind of Powerpoint explanation vis a vie the battle, the armies etc etc ... create some interest. Maybe if no one manage to set this up, just place a DVD with Waterloo [film] showing and some captions. But I guess with the PC age we should set up a PP display and we have the means now ... Other sections might come up with other generic presentation with alreday available models. Regarding trying to come up with massive projects that might be sold to someone, I rather say forget it, if we are not commisioned upfront.

Regarding joint projects and group builds, let us plan ahead for the following HISs. This year we need to concentrate on what we have.

This kind of efforts take time to produce. For example we are already gas down to have the Maltateam figures for WNT and also the joint diorama the Pull [fig+tank+plane]. I would like to see others going for such projects, no need to creat massive dioramas, unfortuently those take time and enthusiasm will go after some months, so just concentrate on specialised projects, join the assets of all club members, surely we do not lack that, and involve the new ones, they will leran much faster being involved in such ideas ...

    PROSIT GUYS!

Re-thinking on these projects ... I have an idea for a joint project, obviously open to discussion ...

... this year is the 3 year we are setting HIS at the Battle for Malta Hangar, and though annually we pool a donation to the Aviation Museum I feel yet we have not given something as a club trademark! I think the Museum cries out to have a decent diorama of Ta Qali airfield as it really was during WW2, many viewers, including myself do not really have a clue how was Ta Qali airfield or remember Ta Qali as an RAF airfield, so why not design a diorama, including aircraft, afvs, AA, supply trucks, crew, groundwork etc etc ... I know during VE day the club has done a similar project in 1/72, which unfortunetly ended up at the War rooms and probably is at a very dire straits and Louise has also donated his dios but but still there is room for a 'full' setup ... so why not re-built a new one, fully detailed, maybe more detailed, accurate and to be homed at the MAM hangar?

I think we deserve to give back something in return, not only to the Museum but also to visitors ... x'tahsbu?

With a little effort everyone can do his little bit then tie evrything together in a grand display ... obviously it is not a project that can be done in a month, so we plan ahead and start and maybe unveil it next year during HIS2011!
