Stug III F/8
Currently building a Stug III and got the Friulmodel Winterketten for it. Anyone knows the number of tracks there was on each side When counting on photos I am getting around 90 but if someone has something specific written down just to make sure.

Caution....
Number of links used in reality DO NOT MATCH number of Friul links needed for the model. But anyway German tanks had a variable amount of sag so the number might not be that crucial?!
Looking forward to seeing some in progress pics Tank Red...

To ALL AFV Nuts and this is a question honestly.
Do you REALLY mean that the number of links would be really counted in a competition? And I mean in a competition where the AFV's are judged by AFV modellers/conossieurs and not picked out randomly from the street like they pick jurors

Re: Stug III F/8
re judges i doubt they will have the time to count the links they will take note if the sag is ok and keep on movingRay wrote:Dottore wrote:Number of links used in reality DO NOT MATCH number of Friul links needed for the model. BUT the question is. do we build eye candy only and disregard accuracy or do we depict authenticity. i would go for an accurate, because afterall i build models for my own gratification

Alex, definitely not eye candy as we all know. I was just curious re this link by link thing, as we all strive for authenticity. Well if you remember when I made the pleats on my still to be ready Highlander I depicted the exact number

Re: Stug III F/8
This is interesting BUT Alex when we consider a Stug or a PzIV have also about 15+ more track links on the hull, and not considering some others extra placed on the field for protection, did the crew obey the rules? I aways thaught the slag of the tracks determined depending the terrain ... snowy, muddy and soggy terrain demanded more slag then the usual but was this considered on the log books ...

Re: Stug III F/8
ivan the slag or track sag is not due to numbers but it has been proven that a new set of tracks on the m1a1 will after a hundred km be almost 20 cm longer hence the track tensioners on almost every thank or tracked vehicle produced.as for additional tracks as armour i agree. i was simply pointing out that regulations which were often discarded on the feild demanded that the stug iii should have 93links per side.
also a sagging track was also very dangerous on the battlefeild because it would easily be shorn off
some tanks eg tiger family could not add or remove a single track at a time because it had two alternating types

Re: Stug III F/8
Might be interesting:
Tancred.... I don't think the extension could come loose. I've seen models with these type of tracks that would have a few extensions missing.... I don't know if this is correct.
Regards
Noel

Re: Stug III F/8
Shelved for the time being , got the Achtung Panzer book recommended by Alex and the kit is quite different from the version it is supposed to depict.
Working on a German armoured car which I hope to finish for AMT, will open another thread with the progress.

Yes Tiny you're MISSING a BIT
Just browse a bit on the AFV threads and you'll see why Alex talked to Doc in that way after spending some 15days just twisting and forming a Photo Etched MG Jacket
