    Hi all,

Just wanted to give you an update and let you know that I have re-started my modelling madness after visiting the club again (something which I truly missed over the past months).

So I have decided to do a double build of 2 similar aircraft: the Wildcat and the Martlet Mk-V. Both are in 1/32 scale with one kit from Trumpeter and the other from Revell.

Since both kits had the foldable wings options, I intend to do one with folded wings and the other with the wings in the extended position (both kits give the ability to have the wings move from extended to folded, but, as a lot of you say, if it moves, it breaks!)

Here are some pics of the kits:

    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Dscf0010

The parts of the Trumpeter are much better moulded and the quality and details is much better than Revell's.

    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Dscf0011
Trumpeter parts being dry-fitted. The engine detailing is quite good but will need some fine tuning. Trumpeter kit has moveable surface which are useless IMHO.

    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Dscf0012
Revell parts still on sprue. Some parts are warped and will need adjustments. Engine detail is very poor on the Revell kit. Revell kit gives the option of either undercarriage down or up.

I have just started construction of the Trumpeter kit. I will start the Revell kit shortly so I can build them in parallel. However I need you help guys.... I need as much photos of the details as possible, like the wing folding mechanism and photos of the actual aircraft (not museum or restored). If you can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate!

    Hi all,

Just a quick update on the progress so far....

I have started assembling the wings for the Wildcat. As said before, these can be left moveable, but they are too flimsy so they will be stuck in the folded position. Here are a couple of photos:

    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Dscf0013
This pic is of the starboard wing which has it's ejection marks filled in with Mr White Putty and are left to dry.

    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Dscf0014
This pic is of the port wing which has had it's ejection marks filled and some of them sanded. You can also see some of the wing ribbing in place.

    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Dscf0015
This is part of the Wasp engine included with the kit, again with ejection marks filled in ready for sanding.

The major problem I am getting with this kit is the number of ejection marks present in visible areas which need to be filled in and sanded.

Will keep you posted on progress.

Looks like a nice start to a great project, they will look great next to each other. Check your references on the floor of the Wildcat, I believe (although I'm not positive) that the floor was open, not a solid floor like Trumpeter has. I think the floor is to look like Brian's Corsair.

Hi guys, I've been busy building these aircraft over the past weeks and I thought I would post an update on progress so far. I decided I would complete as much construction as possible without painting anything, and that is the progress so far (with some photos attached):

Both fuselages side-by-side. Both kits are quite accurate as regards the size of the aircraft, with the fuselages being the same length and shape.
    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Both_f10

    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Revell10 A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Trump_10

Next a look at the wings. Again both are quite accurate and the same overall length and size.
    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Wings10

However, one of the Revell wing halves is "slightly" warped:
    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Revell11
One other problem with the Revell kit is the complete lack of detailing in the wing ribbing. This will not be a problem because as already said, I will be making the Revell will be with the wings fully extended while the Trumpeter kit with will have the wings folded back.

These are the rear horizontal stabilisers / elevators. Again same overall size and shape:
    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Elevs10

    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Revell12 A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Trump_11

Now the biggest difference of all, the engine (if you can call Revell's version an engine:

    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Revell13 A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Trump_12
Trumpeter's engine is made up of 39 pieces, Revell's engine of only 4.

Finally, Revell also included in their moulding the actual date of manufacture:
    A double build: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (Trumpeter 1/32) and Grumman F4F-4/Martlet Mk. V (Revell 1/32) Revell14

    More updates will follow soon.

Everything is a matter of how much are you gonna pay...Revell's kit..is an old but VERY CHEAP kit!!!

In the majority of cases, the old Revell models are pretty accurate but all need a lot of work. It depends on how much you want to go into detail and how much time you want to spend on a model. however, it does not hurt to check out any newly issued model with plans before taking it for granted that it is ok. Same goes for aftermarket stuff. Some people just tend to buy resin and photoetched and use it blindly. Some of the stuff is totally out and a complete waste of money. Bottom line is ALWAYS CHECK OUT THE ACCURACY.

Trumpeter..is a well Known mistaker... The most of her models are out of accuracy...I dont trust her...

    Alex.

PS..The above are my personal opinion, and nothing to do with you. Ok?

Hi Alex, tks for your comments. I thought the same about Trumpeter until some years back. This Wildcat was in fact one of those very WRONG models. It was so wrong that it was removed from shelves and recalled by Trumpeter, until the current version was rolled out. This newer version is much more accurate (in fact it has the same dimensions and overall shape as the Revell). It also has the newer and correct cockpit floor (with the cut-aways). So it looks like this is quite an accurate kit.

    Keep your comments coming.......

Oh Yes...I wonder if we are gonna see an ACCURATE model from Trump...Actually Trumpeter is a great marketing player!!! They chase the "first impression" as pinnacle activity involved in the selling products of their company.

Anyway...I wish you good luck with both of them!!!

    Keep posting mate!
