OPERATION PEDESTAL ANNIVERSARY Empty OPERATION PEDESTAL ANNIVERSARY

August 15, 1942 - Operation Pedestal, the largest convoy operation ever assembled to relieve the sieged island of malta comes to a glorious end with the arrival of the oil tanker OHIO in the grand harbour, barely afloat and severely damaged. Both the Royal navy and merchant navy paid a heavy price for this operation to relieve the island. Tomorrow is the 68th anniversary, let us remember the fallen, amen.

Yes Joseph that's the one......that little ship is world known.....a very gallant ship that saved Malta in WWII...It was kept afloat flanked by two RN Vessels and it limped into the grand Harbour to the jubilation of the Maltese and the British Serviceman alike.

What happened to the Ohio after the provisions were taken off it? Was it sunk?

The ship was so severely damaged that it finally settled on the grand harbour seabed during the unloading operation just as the last gallons of fuel was pumped out. The ship was refloated in 2 halfs and spend the rest of the war in grand harbour, used as storage and to house troops at one time. Facilties over here were not able to put it back together, so after the war it was towed out of grand harbour and sunk by gunfire. Although half of it sunk almost right away, the other half still kept afloat for some time, a reminder of this great ship fighting spirit.

If you remember there was a programme on TVM Dinja Ohra and that diver, Emmy used to locate wrecks and do dives on them. One of the programmes was about the Ohio and he dove on it. I still remember filming underwater with the name of the tanker showing on the stern of the ship.
