    1964 Porsche 904 Empty 1964 Porsche 904

I decided to go ahead with the club's 'suggestion' to build something from the automotive world. My subject of choice is a 1964 Porsche 904 (Carrera GTS) in 1/25th scale by Monogram.

As most of you guys have seen last wednesday, the quality of the kit is lacking in some aspects such as ill-fitting body panels, dents and a scrached wind shield. Despite of all these issues I went ahead yesterday and started assembly of the engine and chassis. I'll try and post some pics later.

What I'm starting to realise is that the kit has a lot of detail which will become hidden once assembled and I'm toying with the idea of not cementing the body to the chassis such that it can be removed to expose the detail.

Another decision I have to make is whether or not to keep the kit's racing theme or build the road going version. I still need to do some research to see what differences there are between the race and road versions as well as the original road-going colours. What I'm sure about is that there will be no swastika decals on this model Razz (still it's roots lie in Nazi Germany)

I'll keep you posted on the progress.

    That's the spirit Wayne! PROSIT!

Personally I do not like the pop outs theme to inspect the interior on models, maybe if need be try to open the bonnet or doors, make more a realistic effect if you really intend to show what is hidden underneath ... or else go to the idea sotto il vestito niente and concentrate on what you see with the naked eye ... that is my view, others might suggest different opinions ... as for Ferdinand Porsche, he designed tanks and the formidable VW Beetle which turned into the Kubelwagon, so the roots are still there! tongue

Preliminary research is not looking good. The road version of the car had a different exhaust system, raised "Porsche" and "Carrera GTS" logos in raised Porsche style lettering. They also had different lights and all of the road cars were in silver - except one which was delivered in orange for a Dutch racing team. I might be able to scratch build the exhaust system, but I have no idea about the lettering and lights

I really wanted to finish it in white and red or orange & black, but unless my model is to represent a replica, it would not be accurate scratch

    MAJOR SET BACK

The quality of the model is far from excellent, parts will not fit and need lots of fiddling & trimming. But that's to be expected from an old casting. The worst thing however is that while test fitting the chassis to the car floor and to the body I realised that the flat floor is warped, big time.

What that means is that unless I'm able to straighten the plastic (I have no idea how), the car will not sit squarely on the four wheels and will wobble. No

At this point I'm thinking on abandoning the project and pick up another car kit I had lying around, a Tamiya Subaru Impreza WRX.

I don't want to be a defeatist but unless you guys have any suggestions on how to straighten that floor, I'm out of options.

I'll bring both kits over tomorrow so you guys can have a look at both.
