What primer for Acrylics?

Hey all, how's things???

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and change to acrylics. So the question comes natural... what primer do you use as a base for acrylics? And where from?

All will do to me, I prefer believe it or not Gamesworkshop acrylic spraycan which is acrylic, available in white and black,available locally from Forbiddon Power Msida ... also Tamiya or MrHobby excellent premiers and for the economical way car primer from the ironmonger but sometimes this tend o be a little grainy and maybe for aircraft is not the best choice.

What acrylics are you using?

Hi Ivan, at the moment, not using any... I have some Vallejo but they are about 2 - 3 yrs old, so don't know if they are still good. Do you buy Tamiya / MrHobby locally or internet? If from the net, do you have any sites?

I prefer Tamiya/Gunze Sangyo [Mr Hobby] unfortunetly i get my supply mostly from abroad, or when I am abroad ... ebay is also a good source as are suppliers in UK and Luckymodel.

As for Vallejo, if using airbrush opt for the AIR version as the other tends to clog, try also Lifecolour they are very good ...

plasticote sandable primer is my favourite choice no grain and finish as smooth as marble it also comes in 4 colours . grey, black, primer red and white but i would leave the white out if i where you available in good hardware or autoparts store.
although not acryllic based i find its etching qualities to be great.

Thanks Tanc, I had completely forgotten about SnM.... ordered some varnishes, thinner, primer and paint ... this Mirage I'm making has a lot of firsts!! Scratch building, Resin Conversion, metal landing gears and acrylic paints!!

it goes on real smooth...but forget about sanding any flaws...it peels off like a rubber layer...i would stay away and stick to Tamiya fine primer, games workshop, mr surfacer or plastic cote...all of which can take sanding real well.
