109 in Malta

Yes Wayne that was one of the Bf109's captuerd in Malta , was talking about yestertday at the club...

But there were more .... what happened to there faith...

This was another case , a Bf109G6 G-6 Trop original factory codes GP+IZ Wn 18046 of JG27 Based at Sicily.
that made a belly landing at luqa 5th May 1943, after an engine failure.

The pilot was Oblt Gunther Hannak who was an ace with 47 victories and was the holder of the Knights Cross.

before he surrended he empty his pistol on the engine,I don't now if he made in anger because of the engine failure or not to became in allied hands intact...

Interesting, especially that sort of rubble wall camo the RAF have done to this Me!!!! Pity we have no idea what happened to this bird, pity they are not in our museums nowadays.

I heard that after Operation Husky and the progress in Italy a good number of captured axis fighters came back to Malta flown by Allied pilots, pity all got lost after the war! Maybe there are still relics in some desolate scrap yard!

Knowing us maltese, I'm sure that whoever had them / access to them sold off whatever they could. Screw posterity and museums! Pity we don't have at least one. On the bright side, we do have a spit and a hurricane at least

Here is another photo of a 109 in Malta. My theory is that they are photos of the same aircraft. The ones Marco put up are the first shots taken, in its original scheme, the ones Wayne found are the next photos. It must have been locally repainted. The one i have is at a later date, probably late or after the war at a sort of show. Who knows what happened to it but it was definitely in good condition and was flown so it might have been taken somewhere else.

Sorry but I have just realised that what i said cannot be true since the ones Wayne found and the one i found are not of a G model. That is probably an F, Marco correct me if i am wrong.

Well from my point of view Brian that is a Bf109G4 or a late mark G2 , you could well notice the intakes on the nose and the large tail wheel that is a G series and from G4 to G2 , the wheel hubs are solid and they are not 100% clear but there must be the wing blisters to fit the large mainwheels....
