the making of UPRISING, Prague 1945

Post  iCocker on Sat Sep 10, 2011 4:50 pm

So here is my next vignette, finally in it's finishing touches. Have been influenced for years with revolutions and uprisings and this incedent have been in the back of my mind for ages. But lacked proper research and inplements. Here I have to thank Czech autor Tomas Jokal who helped with all the mystery of the insurgents Hetzers.

Have to say that for a period this project was shelved, but then with the uprisings and crisis in the Arab world sparked again.

Some inside about Bohemia 1945. The Germans had already lost and Hitler was dead but places like Czechlovakia who were annexed with the regime were still under their control. With the Americans and Soviets aproaching from both sides the insurgents had the chance to start the uprising and once and for all liberate their country. Infact it is the last battle of WW2. The insurgents captured a number of Hetzers that were being built in the BMA and Skoda factory and impressed them. The insurgents who came from all walks of life together with the police, army and joined by the ROA [ Russian soldiers who were under the German army] started their battle to liberation ...

As a diorama, it is an experiment that I had always wanted to tackle. A small base area with a number of figures + action, apart splitting the base to create a two face perspective, a diorama and a vignette from the same project, but that will explain further ...

To divide the base I used a wall with a gate, replicating the real gate in Prague of a notorious concentration camp. A little artistic licensce was added to show it almost a derelict reflecting the crambling regime.

Great, like the history behind it and it is looking good too, the tank is really nicely weathered and so is the wall.Keep at it let us see it finished.

Ivan i have been looking at this piece again. The tank fits almost exactly in the archway opening. What about the gate, did someone open it or was it just forced open by the tank itself/ if this was the case, the gate should be really dented and forced apart from its centre.

Good point here Brian, and was wondering what I was going to do as if I apply a dented gate it will obstruct the tank and men darting in, so still liked to keep the gate almost intact and added an open lock and a broken chain, apart as a symbol the chain adds movement to the scene. Hetzers are not haevy tanks, something similar to a heavy lorry, though probably not really obeying the laws of physics for artistic and symbolism view I opted for a tank charge onto the gate and with it's trust the lock will give away and brake the chain ... the broken chain also the symbolise the broken regime, we have seen many a poster especially from socialists with workers breaking chains ... to create some distress what I did is shift the gates a little from the wall brackets ...

The gate, being wrought iron would probably dent in the direction of the movement of the tank being held together by the chain till this broke, then it would have opened just like it is now, only that the verticals where the chain was tied to would have been forced apart. Heavy tank or not, the gate would give in anyway but not before offering some resistance.

Probable you are right Brian but I worked the idea on the famous Vietnam iconic foto, the NVA T-54 passing through the Presidential gate which was forced open by the tank. Check also the gate on the background.
