Dear friends...I'm interested in building (or at least purchasing for now) a model of a german WW2 U-Boat. The ones with the AA gun on the deck...don't know if they all had it. I made a quick search of common internet model stores and I found a couple of interesting models.

Has anyone got any light to shed on the subject as in which is the best model OOTB and which to avoid etc etc...

Thanks in advance for any help!

That is the late version U boat Dot, the typical and early version had a cannon. Depends the size, 1/72 Revell have a good one, 1/350 or 1/700 [?] Hobbyboss and Revell ... 1/35 Andrea have one which can be ordered parts or whole.

On another note there are interesting Midget Subs by Italeri, Bronco and Verlinden [resin] in 1/35. Bronco are also doing a new sub in 1/35 which will be around 1m long ... take your pick.

If you come to the Marsa Menqa area, Cassar Ship Repair still has the relic of U571 movie prop birthed near the old AFM petrolboats and galleys from Troy movie ... a chance to see a good 1/1 model Smile

    Hi Dottore, Very Happy

A while ago, Revell, issued two versions of the Type "7" U-boats, the type C and the D. They are quire good kits, nearly a metre long and with a very good visual for additional detailing. Gold medals and other companies including Eduard also issued additional detailing sets to go with it - including timber deck and furnishings.
Special hobby have issued the type "23" and the "2A". They also issued a conversion set to convert the type "7C" to a type "D" mine layer, together with a whole range of resin accessories and interior detail sets. You can buy them directly from their e-shop.
Next Wednesday, I shall bring my type "7C" - still under construction, and will explain in further detail the wide variety of detailing, one can carry out.

    See you Wednesday.

been mulling over buying the Revell 1/72 Type V11C as you mention. It is big and well detailed as you agree. Looked at the Eduard PE set and impressive CMK detail resin sets. If I go ahead think Ill go for an OOTB build...(yeah thats the plan). Interested in having a look at how your build is coming along... Very Happy

    Hi Dottore,

The sub yoy wish to build is the type 7C, with the "wintergarden" - that is what the Germans used to describe the additional anti-aircraft platform. Shall bering my sub nest wednesday.

    Hi Dottore,

    No problem at all.

Just one note. The U-boat which is docked at Marsa near Cassar Shipping is good for indroductory generic ideas only. The semi hull is full of errors, so don't use the photos as research reference.
