    Hello Malta! Empty Hello Malta!

Post  Iain Sat Apr 21, 2012 4:52 pm

Hello everyone - thank you for accepting me onto the forum!

I came across the forum whilst looking at the Malta camouflage for the Matilda Tank and felt I just had to sign up as, like many Brits, my family has strong links with Malta and there's are a lot of Maltese subjects I'd like to have a go at eventually...

Both my Great Grandmother and my Grandmother were born on Malta (I believe my great grandmother may have been Maltese - her husband was in the British Army). My Grandmother, Rosetta, was born in 1919 in Valletta (Rosetta Ward). Lots of research needed at some point.

Rosetta married Commander Kenneth Charles Ogilvie OBE RN (my Grandfather) and he went on to serve on ships that were, I believe, based in Valletta during the war (am told his ship was sunk off North Africa) - at some point I intend getting hold of his service records so I can get the details.

He and the family, including my father, returned to Malta in the 1950's - my grandfather was on Mountbatten's staff at NATO Headquarters, Valletta - and my father went to the Royal Navy School on the island.

Apparently my Great Grandmother returned to the island in the late 60's, or early 70's and lived in Valletta.

So - although I've never visited I've grown up hearing about Malta and feel there may be just a little bit of Malta in me - one day we intend to visit!

Does IPMS Malta have such a thing as Overseas Membership?

Modelling-wise my main interest is in 1:32 aviation models (IPMS(UK) SIG leader - 32SIG) and usually 'hang out' over on the Britmodeller forum - but also dabble in other things. Am also an occasional contributor to Military in Scale magazine and used to do reviews and artwork for Scale Aircraft Modelling back in the days of Alan Hall.

When not modelling I fly light aircraft with RAF Halton Aero Club here in the UK and have a bit of a passion for Lotus cars and '80s motorcycles.

So - as well as questions and posts about Malta related modelling - you may also get the odd question about Malta in general!

    Happy Modelling,

    Iain

Thanks for the warm Welcome everyone - *really* appreciated!

I will visit Malta one day - hopefully timed so I can visit a club meeting Smile

In the mean-time I'll be asking lots of questions - I've arrived here because, as you may all know, there's a 'Malta' Group Build over on Britmodeller and I've been looking to build something different from my normal fair - hence the search for Malta Matilda's and ending up here!

Just out of interest - is the old NATO HQ building still around? My grandfather build a large scale ship (I'm told it was the Golden Hind?) whilst posted there in the mid 50s and I believe it was on display in the entrance foyer - wondered what happened to it after NATO closed and whether it would have gone to a museum, or been thrown out...

Had a good nose around the forum - some cracking content - particularly in the research section.

Oh - and looks like we'll be seeing some of you at Telford in 2013 Smile

    Hello mate!

Welcome onboard, mind you the camo of the Matilda is equivalent to the Holy Grail ... that is way difficult to be exact as it depends which Matilda you want to do and in which period, for sure we are aware of two types of camos, recently in a MilitaryModelling article dedicated to Malta Tanks the local curator of the War Museum covered the camos in detail... can you get the name of the place were your grandfather stayed?

    Thanks guys! <waves>

iCocker - I really quite fancy having a go at the Matilda - I have the Echelon decal sheet which includes markings for GALLANT and GRIFFIN and would like to do a small vignette with the tank next to a Maltese wall to demonstrate the camouflage.

During the 50's family were initially billeted in a small hotel in St Julians? before moving into Royal Navy quarters - their address in 1955 was 35 Egmont Close (Valletta?) - but I suspect that area has been developed now.

I have some small family photo's in scrap books (including one taken on top of the NATO building with Prince Philip being introduced to Mountbatten's team - with Royal Yacht Britannia in the background).

Hope you don't mind me posting - just had an email from a distant relative my uncle has put me in touch with - and it turns out I do indeed have Maltese ancestry - which I'm rather excited about cheers

In my intro I mentioned my Grandmother and Great Grandmother were born on the island - it turns out my Great Great Grandmother was a lady by the name of Felichia Cachia born in Zebbug in 1858 - parents Filipo Cachia and Teresa Camilleri.

So there is a little Maltese in me somewhere it seems Smile

    Happy modelling,

You should come over one day to get back into your roots ... and always keep Wednesday evening free in what you plan as you are more then welcome to our clubhouse!

Mind you I have British and Scottish roots myself, my grandfather was British [royal Navy], from Munchester, and my mother have Scottish ancestors Sladden (though no clue about them)... common thing in Malta especially from people coming from the Harbour area : )

Cheers Ivan - I'm still a little blown away - and very excited...

It's funny how a modelling Group Build has led me here - which in turn has prompted my following up a link to a relative I didn't know about here in UK - who has furnished me with the Malta ancestry - this hobby has got a lot to answer for!! Smile

Now have the Maltese side of my ancestry back to 1615 - and apparently still have relatives on the island - so hoping to maybe come over next Feb/March time.

    Scots roots here too Smile

But *very* proud to now know I have some Maltese genes - hopefully that includes the famous 'Maltese Modelling Gene' Smile

Incidentally, as well as family backround with Malta - I held a commission in the RAF VR many years ago - and there was still a great fondness and pride amongst many I met in the British Military's links with Malta. Slightly saddened to see a certain amount of anti-British hostility amongst some Maltese - but I guess I understand...

BTW - if anyone wants any photos from UK museums/sources just shout - have already gained a lot of info from these forums - would be delighted to be able to reciprocate...

Welcome aboard! It's been a long time since we have talked, since I was one of the editors of LSP, that's been quite a few years since I left that site for a number of reasons.

Glad to see you here and looking forward to seeing your builds. The modeling on this site is fantastic and at my level of modeling, kind of intimidating, but it's also helping me to push forward a little bit on each model I am working on. Lots of great help on this site.

Hey Brad - long-time, no speak!

Don't spend much time on LSP these days either.

Agreed to standard of modelling here - amazing that such a small island can produce so many artists!

    Cheers Alex <waves> Smile

Once again, thank you all for being so welcoming - excellent ambassadors for your country! cheers

Visited relatives here in the UK I'd not met before yesterday - and now have a huge amount of material on our connections (and there are *far* more than I ever thought) with the island and the Maltese people. As posted elsewhere - we're currently planning to come over early next year - have a lot of places on the list to visit.

Personally I love the sunshine/heat - but my wife doesn't - so early next year probably the best balance I can get agreement from 'higher authority' for... Smile

And besides, I'm spent up for this year as I'm flying around France with a buddy in an ex RAF SA Bulldog (and the rest of the flying club) at the end if June and I suspect we're going to burn a lot of fuel (and money to pay for it)!
