EE Lightning F-6 Empty EE Lightning F-6

Post  Cyril. Mon Apr 22, 2013 11:02 pm

I am curently building the AIRFIX 1/48 EE Lightning F-6.
Somehow I forgot to take photos while it was still open.
    EE Lightning F-6 00310

Up till now I have replaced the cockpit tub with a resin one from Cutting Edge, which is quite detailed. I have only just started work on the ejector seat,
    so no photos for now.

    EE Lightning F-6 01010

All the wheel wells have been replaced with resin ones from Aires.
    EE Lightning F-6 00410

It takes a lot of sanding to fit the main wheel wells as the wing tickness is very thin.
    EE Lightning F-6 00510

    EE Lightning F-6 00610

The colour scheme I have in mind is that of XR754
    EE Lightning F-6 10313311

With or without the shark's mouth.
    EE Lightning F-6 09893811

I think I prefer it without, but I still have to make up my mind.

Another option would be XR728, but it is too dark.
    EE Lightning F-6 3454411

Hope you like, will keep you posted as I go along.

I love that colour scheme on the Lightning (At least I'm not alone Cyril!). You can make some lovely weathering on it as well. Nice detail up to now.

    Marco,

I like this scheme because it consists of three greys, Very Happy
Medium Sea Grey, Barley Grey and Light Aircraft grey.

The weathering on these aircraft is also quite a challenge, don't you think so?

    Marco,

If you don't agree with my choice of scheme, that is not my problem, Sad I like the photo of XR765, Very Happy but I don't like the traditional WW2 colours of Ocean Grey and Dark Green. Evil or Very Mad I would like to have something different.

If I had to change my mind I would go for a bare metal finish using Alclad 2 paints, the problem is would which one?

Like this one, I mean. But this is an F-2, mine is an F-6.

I know I'm probably the only soul in the world to think this but I genuinely think that the Lightning is one of the ugliest planes that ever took off.

BUT... you're doing a lovely job with the model Cyril, and another British classic rolling off your production line.

    Looking forward to see more.

I don't think it is ugly, Sad more strange for that time, it's like a Javlin with the centre part of the wing missing, and it was a mach 2 aircraft for as early as the late fifties. Looking head on it is quite stealthy. Smile

    Marco, Very Happy

I have been doing some reserch about the colour scheme of the aircraft above and found that the colours are Dark Sea Grey, Dark Green and natural aluminium.

I found profiles of Lightnings of the same era, but some how the grey looks much lighter, like Mid Sea Grey. Do you know the FS numbers of the colours used at the time?

I remember Alex pointing out that Vulcan XH558 has a different kind of Grey and Green, now that aircraft is from the same time as the Lightning, so could there be different colours? Surprised

How about the demarcation line, it is very sharp with no fading.

I agree with you that post war aircraft look better in the earlier scheme Laughing
Any information is welcome, Thanks Very Happy
