Uparmoured Sherman

Despite It's possible your already have seen this, I'll post here what I'm working on. The Sherman is basically done, and currently I'm painting some more figures and making a scenic base.

While I am no AFV Nut, and they are all Shermans and Panzers to me (are they ) I do know a good model when I see one and DEFINITELY this STANDS OUT

A great model as I already told you over ML, and love the tankriders as well!

Of particular note are the painted in OD in a different hue of the tools handle, showing that they are different material then metal and colour blends different and also your trademark with boots prints ...

Apart all that I really like the subtle modulation and the great wetahering especially in teh wheel suspension area, a true work of art! Would like your thaughts about modulation system, we have been reading and experimenting a lot but seems not every model obeys to the rules ... what is your aproach to this style?

PS. When you have time drop over a pics of Love in teh Air, that is one hell of a sweet dio ...

Yes I have been watching this model on other forums and i still spend time staring at it. I reckon your OD mix is XF-62 and Dark Yellow XF-60 right? Somehow it never turns out as green to me!

Lately I'm being using XF21 sky for highlighting the XF62 OD. I learnt this form Michael Rinaldi, and I think it works quite well. The XF60 perhaps gives a too yellowish tone...
A couple of examples with XF21:







Also I tend to apply several green filters to carry the model to "greener" shades.

Yes, they are T66 tracks, the most commonly used type of tracks in HVSS suspensions.

Well, about modulation... Modulation is a little bit treacherous. I think that modulation is just only one minor part of the work, and that after this base, you have to work much more in the subsequent processes (filters, oils, chipping, dirtying...). I think that when "modulated models" "work" well is in fact because you almost don't notice this technique is there (as with most of the other tricks of our trade). But I insist, modulation is just part of the process. Nevertheless, I think that some people do not understand this very well, and they think that modulation is just the magic recipe for an appealing model, and they disregard the "classical" techniques. Then you end with just a sort of "cartoon" model. It is complicated.
Some of the "old Spanish modelling guard" (I mean the very experienced modellers who I know for many years, but who sometimes are younger than me ) is not very fond of modulation, they think that it is just like "fireworks". And I partly agree with them, in the sense I wrote above. Modulation is just the beginning.
I prefer to think more in terms of "light modulation" and not "colour modulation". I mean, I'm quite reluctant to paint in diferent shades contiguous parts of a model, like hatches or panels (but I suppose I did it too). I prefer to treate the whole surface, higlighting more horizontal, upper surfaces. In fact, modellers (at least here) have been doing that this for many years, but highlighting the center of the panels, and not the upper portions. Probably this is nothing new, just another way to do it.

Just some useless thoughts, I suppose

Though i like the effect overhead lighting can produce...I will never (never ay never?) paint hatches or other components in a different tone compared to the tank hough amittedly I've seen it being pulled off well in some models....

Anyway enough drooling on your sherman (for today) have to go et some modelling done!

I simply agree with you Antonio, it is a trick with playing with light effects. Personally I am not a keen admirer of the dramatic ones but subtle effects I like. I also agree that if taking this aproach on all surfaces, it would be all, not one area is different then the other, always as if it is on the same angle. It is the similar aproach we do in overheadlighting when painting figures.

Playing with colours and ending in a cartoon effect I find it toooooo much. I have to say that lately we all saw the images of a certain panzer grey tank, and have to admite when I saw the fotos on ML it was a BIG jawdropper but then we saw it last Euro and colour was purple, and the effect was over and above. So this effect is controversal, it is very fotogenic as you can control the lightings but on a comp table where available light is out of your hand it looks too much.

I personally like your approach, taking into consideration the 3D overall effect ... the mythical STOP sign rule designated by Master Shep Paine.
