I don't know how much your news has covered the terrible series of tornadoes that have been hitting the Midwest and the South, normally they generally don't get in the middle of cities very often, but this year they have been nailing small to good-sized city's and leveling large parts of them. Joplin, Missouri got hit hard a little while ago, here is a link to a lot of photos and at the very end of the page there are a couple videos. There are also some before and after pictures, absolutely heartbreaking.

April and May are the big tornado months for that area, then on average, the jet stream over Canada changes and brings all of that to the northern part of the Midwest, which is where I live. I live in Minnesota which is right up against Canada right in the center of the country. while we do get some very nasty tornadoes, generally aren't quite as strong, down south they have th colder air from the Atlantic colliding with the warm moist air coming off the Gulf. We get the colder air from Canada and the Arctic that can collide with some warm air coming up from the Gulf which probably would've lost some of the temperature and humidity, we also get the warm moist air of the Pacific, as it goes over the Rockies you can really broil into a good storm which can really build a power over the Great Plains to the west of me.
