Brilliant Guz, I love this beast, one of those things that look like a tank in the sky to me!
One question how come the D-Day invasion stripes are only on the underside, had the impression that these were carried on the top as well?

Re: P-47D Thunderbolt
Many allied aircraft had invasion stripes just on the underside especially the US planes like the T'Bolt and the mustang.

Good question, as brian said many of the USAAF aircraft had invasion stripes on the lower sides only. RAF and FAA aircraft I think most of them had them above and below. The thunderbolt was a big beast then and the A-10 continued with the name today, another big aircraft.
p.s. maybe it was not economy in mind, maybe it was to avoid shoot first then check markings later - the invasion stripes were clearly more visible than national markings.

Re: P-47D Thunderbolt
Apart that airsuperiority was allied ... strange how logistics for each army changes.
An interesting story is during the entrance to Berlin, Soviet tanks were ordered to be marked with a white cross on top and a strip around to avoid hungry tank hunters from USAAF and RAF [probably more from their Sturmoviks] mistake them for panzers. Seems that some Germans spotted this code and implied it to their tanks ... if it is a myth we have yet to find out but I doubt that the few tanks in German hands managed to make any decent breakthrough to avoid the Berlin onslaught ...
