Yes I think so, it looks like the tank is facing St. George's Square and that corner is where today there is Ascot House. Suspect

    Nice pic, Tancred!

THe tank belongs to the 48th Queens Regiment of Duke of Oldburn. This tank is actually of the 2nd battalion! It's nic-name was ADVANTAGE.

Same here Noel, where did you get the name and the unit? Very interesting if you manged to find the name. here are some further info. IWM fotosession show other images of the same Valentine during the King's BDay ceremony in Valletta but never managed to find any more then the one above ...

According the the British War Diaries this is what I managed to get so far ... by the way Miniart Val is different then this, this has a fifferent Turret and road wheels, unlike LandLease MkIV versions ...

3rd May two Valentine Mk II received from Middle East. 11th, an "I" Tank was returned from REME Workshops and an "I" Tank sent from Luqa to REME Workshops. An exercise at Marfa on the 19th-20th used two Light Tanks, three Cruisers and three Valentines, one at Hal Far on the 20th used a Light Tank, an A9 and an "I" Tank. On the 22nd another Valentine III was received from the Middle East. 27th saw an "I" Tank and crew sent to Ta Kali for towing duties. 2nd June a Valentine was displayed at Palace Square, Valetta for the King's Birthday celebrations. This may be the tank shown in IWM GM3408 and -9 dated 3rd June. On the 3rd a A9 and driver went to REME Workshops. 5th, a Light Tank and two Valentines co-operated in a sub-calibre anti-tank gun shoot at the North of the island. 10th, an exercise on control, map reading and wireless involved a Light Tank, two A9 and four Valentines. One A13 was sent to REME Workshops on the 13th. Another control exercise on the 17th used two A9 and a Light Tank from Nos 1 and 3 Troops. On the 18th an "I" Tank and driver returned from REME Workshops.

    Summary -

It would appear that there were 18 tanks on Malta between 1941 and 1943 -

Three Light VIC listed as at September 1942 although only two were landed in November 1940. IWM GM465 dated 24 March 1942 shows three in the same shot. GM474 and GM847 both show T5878

Four Matildas all landed in November 1940. GM484 shows GALLANT GM498 and GM836 show GRIFFIN Others were Greyhound and Faulknor

Four A9 received in the first months of 1942

Three A13 IIA received in the first months of 1942. These include T15231 in GM454 and T18117 in GM467

Four Valentines, two Mk II and two Mk III received in April and May 1943

And that reminds me of this joke:

    Gay Flight Attendant

I once was on a plane where I was served by an obviously homosexual male flight attendant. At one point, he bounced over to where I was sitting and announced "The Captain has asked me to announce that he will be landing the big scary plane shortly, so if you could just put up your trays, that would be great."

I did as he had instructed but the woman sitting next to me did not. A few moments later, our flight attendant came back and said to her: "Ma'am, perhaps you couldn't hear me over the big scary engine, but I asked you to please put up your tray so that the captain can land the plane." She still wouldn't comply.

Now he was getting angry and asked her again to put up the tray. She then calmly turned to him and said: "In my country, I am called a princess. I take orders from no one."

Our flight attendant replied: "Oh yeah? Well in MY country, I'm called a queen and I outrank you, bitch, so put the tray up!"

@ Ray / Alex : But you still had a slight doubt! jocolor

This goes to show that I can publish a book about "ARMOUR in MALTA 1941 - 1945" and just invent stuff!!! How about it!?

    Prsit Noel

Probably most of the books out there are based on lack of sources, God knows how many pics are stated to be in some place and proibably it's somwere else ... remember the old quote from you ... IMMA INT KONT HEMM? tongue

But apart from this joke it is still in doubt what the hell is that name of the Val, sources surely lack we really need to search another phito and I guess if it was a celebration in Valletta probably some civvie has taken another photo apart the known IWM one, maybe also Allied Newspaper ... will still continue the search
