    Face.......Hospitaller Knight.

Post  Ray on Sun Aug 02, 2009 3:43 pm

Face is finished on this one ladies and gents.......

It's the Soldiers' 90mm Teutonic at Tannenburg abely sculpted by Adriano Laruccia, which I'll be depicting as a Hospitaller Knight :p

I hope I haven't returned to the crappy pics era and after 777 pics and playing with the lighting rig, I managed to salvage these three Embarassed

All comments fire on as always Laughing

    Hi Ray

Seeing the face in my hands and the fotos now, looks that lighting is still a bit harsh. The white balance is strong so might or put the lighting at a distance or else try to diffuse a little with some screens or tracing paper, otherwise great face ... so you intend this knight as a Rhodes fighter from the first siege?

Yep seems so, though till date I have pretty small amount of research of teh Rhodes period, this figure looks the part for a 15c knight, if my memory is good I recall that the first Siege was done by the Mamelukes on the Rhodes fort which was not that successful and repulsed immediately, probably this Knights fits that period ...

Yeah ok got that mate........but he has the snout visor attached to the helm if I may remind you.......not found much info which shows that visor per se used in Rhodes or am I wrong?

Either or, I'm still going to paint him as a Hospitaller with the snout visor irrelevant of Rhodes or not.......if worse comes to the worst, I'll just omit "the place" per se on the name plate and make it just
    "Hospitaller Knight 15C"

He is wearing a bascinet and typical of the period, visor or not it is up to you as not much info is available, but remember those guys were wealthy so could afford to buy the best armour of the period and by the time of Rhodes the idea of poor monks had vanished ... they were already starting to be the elite!

The reference you have in your mind is Spiteri's artistic interpretation and an effigy which shows a Hospitaller in bascinet, but that does not mean the snout was not used. On another hand that helmet was more typical for knights fighting on horseback.

By the way do not go on the usual date only figure, we know our subjects so better not falling in the stereo type gismo like many ... an at that period the knights were not running around Europe, so skirmished were only restricted to the Rhodes, sea battles or attacks on infidel ports.

    Hope it helps ...

Yes sure it does help mate.......he's a cavalry man alright (even though unhorsed) as he's got spurs on his shoes, and his armour is rich indeed with etched gold border all around........I plan to spend ama it is needed to make it look as rich as it should be Twisted Evil Suspect

Thanks a lot for now and see you Wed............

    Ivan, good morning...........

If I may bug you some, even though still some way to go till I paint the cloak, how was the cross/es on the mantle sides (if any) bearing in mind the crosses on the tabard and sheild are simple big crosses touching the four sides of their respective fields Suspect Evil or Very Mad ?

Hope to see you this eve Rolling Eyes

Very good question indeeed mate but have no clear answer from my side as that period is very vague, I guess you cannot eliminate the cloak at all hux?

According to the rule the mantle should be black with a white cross [probably potance cross as it has alreday been used during the crusades]. On the other hand habits were only meant for civilian duties. For military from the 14c onwards looks that this item was like omitted from the uniform and the red surcaot with white latin cross was being used. The only effigy of the period is without mantle and also Spiteri's and Hook's on Osprey interpretation.

Does the cloak has a hood as I forgot that figure?

Personally I would take a little artistic licence if you are keeping the mantle. The figure might be in winter setting so his mantle might have a reason [ala Mutley din] and I would keep it black but no crosses ... for better info might be ideal to ask over El Paesso, some good experts there ...

Ray..... I smell overexposure. Also White Balance not activated and it seems you are using warm lighting!

    This is what I use:

Left - Above - Right ....... 3 lights in cool daylight (energy savers) around 75W (old measurement).

Switch on the lights, point the camera to a white area and press to White Balance to programme the camera to that lighting set-up.

    And shoot!

    Regards
    Noel
