8th September ... Victory Day Empty 8th September ... Victory Day

Post  iCocker Thu Sep 08, 2011 9:43 am

A day to remember for us Maltese and lovers of Military History.

The day that the Siege of 1565 was won.

The day that in 1800 the Revolutionary French garrison decided to call; it a day and surrender the island, unfortunetly not to the Maltese insurgents but to the small British force that came to our aid.

During WW2, 8th September reminds us of the surrender of our arch enemy the Fascist Italy and the surrender of the Italian Fleet at St Paul's Bay.

A prayer to all the Maltese and foreign man at arms who defended the Rock. Amen

Well said both of you, all other supposedly national holidays are not near as significant as this day. But when will we learn to rise above the politicians who manipulate us for their own ends!!

8th September ... Victory Day Empty Re: 8th September ... Victory Day

Post  iCocker Fri Sep 09, 2011 7:53 am

For ages the only day celebrated as a National Day was the 8th September, this has been celebrated from the time of the Knights of St John.

IMHO, the other national days Republic, Independence and Freedom have all insights of political intervention and screwed history, the worst two remain our Independence Day [which was just a piece of paper as we were never independent from the crown], on the other hand the only actions we had to follow our independence were when Maltese took arms as insurgents and blockaded the French rulers of the time. Unfortunetly being so proad after 2 yeras blockaded the French garrison did not opt to surrender to insurgents but to an army, unfortunetly instead of independence that action resulted in another colonial ruler ...

Freedom Day, another silly idea to get rid of NATO to satisfy a neighbour regime [finally after 42 years finished] from having a watchdog over his head, with the idea of giving us a helping hand for a newly born country.

Probably after Victory Day remain Republic Day, the real day that Malta was born, free from any colonial intervention.

For me a National Day is a day that our SIMPLE forfathers fought and died for it, not some silly INTELLIGENT and VAIN politician decided 'diplomatically' and with sweet talk for us ... my 2c on this issue ...

No wonder we need all those days then...

If we are defining 'National' then the 8th September does not fit in as the fights were not to become a nation or for the national interest but to defend the interests of others, the Knights in the first instance and the English and their war effort in the second. It is still obviously a very significant day.

I cannot disagree more, as with this kind of reasoning we are saying that countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many others are not yet born since they still have the Queen of England as their head of state Razz

Born as a Republic mate, those countries were wise enough that they still linked themselves to the Crown [apart countries like NZ and Australia were white populated in the 18c ... when in Malta we had already been the centre business of the Mediterranean], apart those lands were conolised and killed their original natives. They are led by white/black men and not by aborigines, maoris or indians ... so surely they can never hold a republic as they never had one!!!!!!

Someone wise enough in Malta in the 50s and 60s had similar plans to benefit from the Crown but the always hindering of everything - the famous Malta Kuria plus the then Nationalist party [who at that time was still a pure nationalists not the capitalist we have now] acted against in that famous referendum ... bad for us all as we ended in a 'communist-like' state instead till the late 80s! But that is another sad chapter in our political history and I see no place to discuss here ... but facts are facts!

Regarding to Malta during the siege, the Knights were not defending their interests but just this rock, the religion and their ego, they had already lost everything in Rhodes. The natives, the nobles, the town folk and the peasants joined the fight and not one surrender to the infidel, they prefered to die. That is the difference, they fought for the rock and for Europe turning into an Ottoman annex. So yes it is a NATIONAL pride! At least to me ... tongue

my last comment on the subject. 8th september should be our national day because it is the only day in which all Maltese associate themselves with, irrespective of politico/social creeds
it has a religous and historical value which no maltese citizen can be offended by.

ok, have been reading through the comments, I have a proposal for a national day, one which all would agree, irrelevant of political and religios beliefs - make it July 27 - 1974 (birthday Day) so that I will not have to take it leave Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Joking apart, we have got a lot of national days, 21st september 1964 (The so called independence day, partly cause we still had the Queen as head of state, with a governor general acting on her behalf) and 31st March 1979 (just the day when british forces pulled out after the defence aggreement had expired) are both historical days, but nothing more as they are incomplete by themselves, apart the fact that they have been heavily politicised when make them unfit for a single unifying national day. The 8th september of 1565, 1800, 1942 are great achievements for our nation irrelevant under whose rule we were. The 8th sept 1800 can stand out cause we were the Maltese that revolted against the french but in the end we gained a british ruler. 8th sept 1565/1942 are also exceptional days in our history but again they just mark the end of a battle, not disrespect intended but in the end we still remained under foreign rule. All these dates are part of our history and should be honoured and respected because without these we would not be here today. The single date that fits for single national day is Republic day, 13th december 1974, cause on this day we truly became independent and free from foreign rule until 1st May 2004 Sad

p.s. - this is just an opinion, hope nobody gets offended!

Nice one JF I love you

Very Valid Point that you handed out & I partly agree with you, but as you stated, it lasted till 1st May 2004 & so ama it was true that 2/3 of Parliament voted for the Republic way back in 1974, it still carried a Political Party Stamp ama Indepedence Day before it & Freedom Day after it, so.......IMHO I AGREE 101% with Alex & whoever is in favour of Victory day 1565 because WE as a Whole Unified Maltese Nation fought to defend This Rock, irrelevant of under whom we were, WE SIMPLY DID NOT WANT TO BE SLAVES TO THE INFIDELS OF CHRIST Evil or Very Mad

I BELIEVE THAT THE DAY HAS COME TO REALLY REVIVE THIS DAY OF 8TH SEPTEMBER 1565 & MARK IT AS OUR NATIONAL DAY, TO PUMP SOME PATRIOTISM IN OUR VEINS AS GOD WILLS IT cheers

DEFINITELY My Last Words, since Nestor is screaming madly at me from the other desk pale pale pale pale pale pale pale
