    Reunited - Leningrad 1944 Empty Reunited - Leningrad 1944

Post  iCocker Thu Aug 06, 2009 7:49 pm

Starting off with my ongoing project this year, might some have already seen my battered model some time ago, but here are some images of the progress of some modulation and starting off the hairspray technique of a heavily worn out winterwashed russian KV1 Model 1941 that was still lingering till the end of victory of the Siege of Leningrad in 1944. Model is 1/35 Trumpeter with just added grills from Eduard PE and some battered fenders from my side ...

    First experiment with modulation technique.
This technique introduced by master modeller Adam Wilder [USA] is a technique to create a 3D effect on models, the famed zenital lighting effect, the fundamental principle of figure painting ... the principla of all techniques is no defferent in any particular subject in modelling!

Though my idea was not that successful in the fundamental modulation technique, it helped me to be the pediment for lighting effects and weathering for the next step ... the famous hairspray technique for whitewash.

And the hairspray and weathering begins ...

The hairsray technique is a simple method of producing worn out paint job, much ideal for whitewash and desert camo. The idea is to have the already based painted model ready with a satin coat finish. Working in sections a waterbase coat of hairspray is given and then over it an acrylic whitewash coat allover model. Immediately with a corse flat brush and water you start taking off the whitewash, The hairspray act as a dissolving agent and with the more action by brush the more the paint is taken off. Experimentation is heavily adviced for this technique but it is not difficult.

Next step shall be filters and then the pain in the arse job, putting highlights scratches and depth to each scratch, it is labourise but worth the work ...

Scratches and rust stains are done with oils and acrylics, working with a good mix of colours to acheive differences, overall there are about 7 mixes of rust! Tracks are metal Friul, nothing beats these for weathering and natural sagging ...

The model is now prepared for further weathering, the pigments and oil stains.

Ah so you are doing a whitewash instead the ugly OD!

By teh way over Missing Lynx Zaloga commented that the Tamiya changed the consistency of OD. It is very far from the old pigment and when he mixes with Drak Yellow to acheive the disired tonality it changes from the usual hue ... damn Tamiya they screwed the colours again!

Zaloga is still experimenting in another solution from the chart maybe in a diffeent mix ...

Good looking KV Ivan and the weathering is beautifully executed! Cool

Very good indeed!!! Superior work!!! Congrats!!

Let me ask a couple of question if you please.

Have you used Enamels or Acrylics for the basic color? The Varnish is Enamel or Acrylic?
    I guess Enamel..

AFV, have a lot of techniques for their weathering!!! Have you ever made a "burned" one?

    Thanks Alex el Greco!

I only use acrylics base work an all, the varnish was MrHobby satin [aerosol] as was lazy cleaning up my airbrush, but it did the work for my intension, as what was needed was just a coat to protect the base. Filters and Pigments I am using are MIG. These techniques still are good use for a whitewashed plane IMO ...

Next project shall be a KO tank but with a difference ... so wait and see Wink
