Re: Butterfly Princess 80mm
From pics I found on the net + the book TanKred lent me (where the same subject is featured) the drab scheme is on the inside, while the brighter scheme is underneath.
However, I will submit myself to "reality in fantasy" just the same!!
Doc Roe, I'd appreciate it very much if you were to spare just one tiny book you can lend me for guidance please, especially if you're coming to BBQ this eve
As I said, nothing is finalised I just went "crazy" with the colours & "pattern" to test my mettle with the airbrush + acrylics (remb NEW2ME)& all their hyped diluents, so the wings just served as a test bed of all sorts, sort of
If things go according to plan, I'll do my best to bring her with me as she is

Ah there is one point that justifies your colour choice Ray, females normally are drap compared to males, so 'naturally' you are correct on this subject ... keep them coming she surely be a show stopper ... in the future you should do the Andrea flying libellula elf as another companion ...
Again our exENTOMOLOGIST forgot everything since he is now in Freud's realm

Re: Butterfly Princess 80mm
Morn my SSM Brethren
Here are some pics to show you where I am with this beauty
This is as far as airbrush work goes
I ENJOYED the process after sooooo many years & kept the swearing to a bare minimum honestly even though it was not an easy job as everything kept coming in everything's way but managed a decent free hand job on body and wings.....the only masking done was on the whole wings when they were ready
Can I ask for an opinion PLEASE? Do you think I should leave the wings' veins as they are and not outline them in black, since they are quite wide and IMHO would look too accentuated?
Anything else please do fire on as usual
NOW IT IS TIME TO SHARPEN THE BRUSHES AND KEEP THEM BUSY n WET

Re: Butterfly Princess 80mm
Very good Ray, the wings are damn cool, you really captured that 'metallic' electric blue of the tropical swallowtail ... as for the veins I think it would loose much of the work if you re-paint in black, unfortunetly the maker made them pretty thick, maybe just add that little shadow and highlight to create the effect, that wings were made in sections, otehrwise it is cool!
Love also the body paint job ... will surely be a picker this gem mate!

Great work and some quesrtions....
Is the blue and yellow on the body inevitable spray from the wing painting or as Ivan suggested something done purposely to complement the hind wing scheme? Cos I've never seen butterflies with a coloured torso/body....
Love the colours though personally I would have gone for a drab underside...
With the same reasoning I would paint the veins....It is a butterfly after all!
Love me or hate me its my opinion and I said it...but great airbrush work mate!
Looking forward to more...

matt i cant help but answer, of course you are entitled to an opinion but
for heavens sake have you ever seen a fairy? this is fantasy, figment of someones fantastic immagination, sometimes you look at things too rigidly, this is what fantasy modelling is all about, vibrant colours, fairytale characters, and our dreams or nightmares, for that matter, given a third dimension
anyway
RAY I LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE SO FAR

Brilliant work Ray, the airbrushing is really nice. I agree with our Doc however and would paint the veins on the wings. If you choose the colour carefully, this can be a really nice effect.

Alex....
I know its fantasy....for heaven's sake theres a bimbo with wings...BUT...you MUST pertain yourself to a MINIMUM of realism...
Just because its fantasy dooesnt mean you have no rules I THINK...then again its just my 2c worth of opinion...

Re: Butterfly Princess 80mm
I like the wings Ray...Great airbrush work and the choice of colour is spot on IMO. To be honest I'm not so sure about the body painting at this stage, will wait until the face , hair etc. are done. But hey, it looks like we have another awesome piece coming up.

For Alex's mind...
It is simple enough cousin...if the sculptor thought to sculpt a vein on the wing...it has to be painted as a vein...
Coloration on butterflies is due to scales. Remember that 'dust' which use to rub on our fingers when handling butterflies (those of you who did). That dust is nothing but scales which donne the butterflies' colour. Now there are NO scales on venation...so fantasy or not, making a vein coloured is heresy in my books...
Now obviously Ray you can do all that your mind pleases but even looking at the wings...seeing the colour overlap on the veins to me stands out badly...

Re: Butterfly Princess 80mm
I agree with Doc, there is something not quite right when you look at the wings. One option would have been not to let the colours you sprayed in overlap the veins. They would have remained in the base dark colour and you could have sprayed the varous shades in the spaces between them still retaining your desired pattern of colour. That can be a solution.

Re: Butterfly Princess 80mm
a midsummernights dream by william shakespeare. the lord of the rings trilogy by jrr tolkein, the chronicles of narnia by c.s. lewis, alice in wonderland and through the looking glass by lewis carrol, the star wars trilogy, just to name a few WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN WRITTEN OR MADE IF LOGIC AND NOT A WONDERFUL FERVID IMMAGINATION TOOK PRECEDENCE. fantasy be it in litterature, movies or modelling defies all logic it is the fruit of unconventional thinking hence fantasy.
and i suppose we are talking about a fantasy creature here for as far as i know i have never had the pleasure of seeing a fairey.(that is the mytical creature and not the two legged male wingless type)or an ass with a human body,(though i have seen asses disguised as humans) immortal pointed eared elfs and aliens, green orcs harvested from funghi, lions that talk, minotaurs, beastman etc etc etc

Fantasy elements...
In the fantasy elements you mentioned are the eyes depicted in the colour of skin or mouths painted over as hair???? A vein is a vein is a vein Alex....if it is there...it has to be painted as a vein!
