What a feast Gordon!
If you wish to do something on those lines I advice to use pigments, different colours to get the effects of dry nad fresh mud.
I would start to do some effects by mixing pigments [lighter one] + pollyfilla/plaster + water + white glue + MIG Fixer. You need to obtain a milky substance. Then take a large flat brush that has seen some btter days [min tac-Cinizi tajbin hafna] and dip it, remove the access and place it in line with the area you wish to start ... take your airbrush and spray some jets of air, play around with the pressure to get control of the effects desired ... I advice to try on a test model first!
Take a peep here http://ak-interactive.blogspot.com/search/label/fresh%20mud
http://ak-interactive.blogspot.com/
Continue the same effect anke one on top of each other with different shades, reserve the darkest for the final touches and add gloss varnish [acrylic] to the mix to get a fresh moist effect ... it is a bit messy but fun!
Try it out mate!
PS. Just a small note the light arms should be more darker, almost black and do not just dry brush aluminium everywere reserve it to the barrel only, certain parts are plastics ... google for references!

Maybe on a smoother tone Sammy, the technique might work ... but will leave that for the equistrian experts to give us their thaughts ... but for making mud also on figures this tech. works aswell ...
