    As bad as this one is, Okinawa was the next island and the last before the Japanese homeland and was much worse than this was. That gave the planners real concern about the invasion of the Homeland Islands (which was to be significantly larger than D-Day) and conservatively estimated between 250,000-1,000,000 Allied casualties in the casualties on the Japanese side, both civilian and military to be much worse.

    It was amazing how close the destroyers would get to shore to give point blank support fire!
