    Bri

I like the combination and neat weathered vehicles, especially the aircraft, but I suggest to work a bit more on the kubel. Sand accumilate everywhere and these vehicles speeded up, I would suggest to add more streakes and deposit of sands especially inside and where it holds, the front area and lower part it looks more mud and clutter then sand ... not sure if you understood what I mean.

I suggest to work with paint not pigments ... it would look more subtle ...

Will try Ivan but it already looks like a mess to me, there is hardly any of the original paintwork showing and i don;t want to overdo it. I only used powders on the wheels and other areas where it would accumulate. I think that you need to see it in real life, it looks better than in the photos. I also feel that the interior is a bit too clean especially the floor, i put sand in the aircraft's cockpit so there should be much more in the car interior. i will try to add more dirt on the insides.

Brian that's was my intention, to see it real , the photos don't do the justice.

I tend to agree with Marco here , the fotos are not making justice ... personally I use pigments only to create mud, I prefer to make my own dust effect by brush or airbrush which I feel have more control and can create better hues ...

Ivan, i did use the brush but then when i sprayed the matt varnish, the effect vanished. without the matt varnish to seal it all in you cannot touch it, it comes off onto your fingers. i will bring it along when it is done, if i keep bringing bits and pieces you would have seen it all then when it is done, it is less appreciated. Let me finish the figures and i will bring it along. probably after Christmas the way things are slowing down.

Ah the matt varnish ... it shows you are a figure modeller Smile ... on AFVs it is rarely used, I personally do not mind the satin finish on metal and then having matt weathering, it gives the proper effect ... unfortunetly when you give an over varnish it will kill the subtle effects, you have to retouch I'm afraid but again better I see it, we are just judging fotos ...

Wonderful combination Brian, as said over Fb, the cherry on the cake was the soldier enjoying the shade, a common feature in Africa Corps fotogalleries and yet neglected in modelling ... BRAVO!

what great dio! I would like to ask you this question:

the dio shows two tyre marks for the plane. How come there is no mark for the rear one?

    Very nice, Brian! Well done!

One thing that I saw most are the rocks. The ground looks rocky........... I'm not saying it's bad or good...... but is it only the bay area that is with rocks and the take off/landing was soft sand or it was possible to take off/land on such.

Right here goes, the tyre marks for the rear wheel were there but got obliterated when i sprinkled the sand on the plaster base. So you are totally correct there. Guilty as charged. Maybe i can be forgiven a bit here because the weight on the tail wheel is nothing compared to that on the main wheels seeing that they bear most of the weight of the aircraft including the engine.

As for the rocks, there are only small stones where the aircraft is and if you see some photos of the actual areas, they were ver rough indeed and quite rocky. So i tried to get as close to the real thing as possible.

Just as I thought with the rear wheel... not much weight there.

Never studied actual photos of desert planes ... it just goes to show the conditions they used to fly those machines. One thing that the diorama made me notice is the heat and imagining the heat in the cockpit! Thanks for the explanation Brian!

REgarding the ambience I think Brian pulled a natural habitat well. There are different 'desert' terrains and colours depending the areas they would be stated. Colour ranges from golden yellow, red and grey ... areas that would have very soft sand was a nightmare for all, tanks and aircraft, infact the 'balloon' type tyres used by the kubelwagen were meant so they could slide over soft sand better then tyres with tread for crosscountry. So when you study fotos one see rocky sandy areas ... also little vegetation here and there was possible in certain areas ... I think Brian was spot on on the ambience ...

As Ivan said there were different areas but not all like the typical sand dunes just sand areas we imagine. There are also normally clumps of grass but i thought i would really be criticized if i did that. i was really tempted because that is how most of the areas in the photos were.
