its just a bluish enamel filter Brian. As we discussed last time a filter ads depth and chromatic richness to the finish. All you need is very dilute colour (made out of enamel or oils) say 10-20% colour to thinner (or the ready made filters from AK, Wilder or AMMO which I use), and apply it over the varnished model. Preferably satin or matt varnished. Then brush has to be moist NOT soaked and avoid getting the colour collecting around details. (That would make it a pin wash). As you noted well I like to apply it in vertical strokes on the sides and in quick passes on horizontal surfaces.
