For the record, by 1976 the F-14A Tomcat was already in service and replacing the F-4 in carrier air wings. In fact the F-14 Tomcat's first combat tour came in April 1975 with VF-1 'Wolfpack' and VF-2 'Bounty Hunters' operating off USS Enterprise during Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon in the closing days of the Vietnam war. Both VF-1 and VF-2 had begun Tomcat conversion during 1973.
USS Nimitz operated the Tomcat from 1977 till 2002, the first Squadrons being VF-41 'Black Aces' and VF-84 'Jolly Rogers' as part of CVW-8. Both squadrons converted to the F-14 during 1976/77 deploying aboard the Nimitz in Sep 1977. The last squadron to operate the Tomcat off USS Nimitz was VF-213 'Black Lions' CVW-11 in Jan 2002 ending 25 years of Nimitz F-14 Tomcat operations.
