Why not plan a box diorama, and play around with some lighting effects ... for example preparing for a night raid or an early morning mission ...

Those civilian figures are really cool and there is such a vast and realisitc choice to choose from. I love the guy asleep on the table. There's lots of scope for those. you can really do something innovative with them. And what quality too. The detail is exquisite on such a small scale.

Very good idea Ivan. I never thought of boxed dioramas. I will continue working on what I have and if by the time I finish, the civilians are for sale, I will add them in. If not I can always leave it as it is and play around with the light to add some interest as you suggested.

Thanks Ray. I'm really enjoying it. I am planning to position the fort on a hill to give it a bit more realism.

I practically scanned all Osprey-Fortress eBooks and seems that the Miniart Fort's architectural style is closest to those of English and Welsh Castles. Most probably will have to make some general alterations to the kit or change the setting of the scene Crying or Very sad The latter option is more tempting Cool

No William. Not yet. I decided to take the long, but IMO most sensible way, and covered all the walls with magic sculpt! Now I'm scribing the stonework panels before assembling them into, hopefully, a more convincing English castle. In the mean time I ordered another set of knights, a set of guards this time.

Yes Brian they are very well-modelled. I hope to start putting things together soon. I didn't have much modelling time at hand last week Sad And yesterday was too nice a weather to stay indoors (my wife's words not mine Rolling Eyes )

Re weather, we were lucky at least on one weekend from ALL "winter" which is an under estimation of the MILD winter we had this year and officially expires on the 20th of this month Sad

I'm really looking forward to seeing you painting a small-scale figure, because as you know I'm very eager to learn and hopefully master the high-contrast technique which is so important in this scale. By the time you return from Spain, the fort's construction and terrain should be ready for painting.

Thanks Ray. Truly inspirational, especially when they are coming from a master specialising in whites like Luca Olivieri. They are bit bigger than 1:72scale.

BTW I shall soon be mounting my Hochmeister and the sergeant in a snow setting. Because of such a small scale, I won't be using micro balloons for snow but will try marble powder (one of Shep Paine's methods).

Ara veru helwien dawn il figures!!!!

THey make you want to buy them and paint them!!

When you mentioned 'Box diorama' I get claustrophobic! THe idea of looking at a diorama through a small opening..... is not my thing! Neutral

    keep it up.

After some reading and talking I came to the conclusion that this setting is not best displayed as a boxed diorama because a lot of what's going on in the fort's yard will be lost, but the idea put forward by Ivan intrigued me up to the point that I already bought the figures for a future boxed dio!

Also the Subject of this one had to be changed due to problems with the fort's architectural style. It is now that of an English Garrison during the Scottish war period not Teutonic. I haven't thought of a good title yet.

I think that it would be interesting but if it were an internal scene like an indoor fight or what is going on in a particular area of the castle. i have seen many box dioramas from a certain John Reid on Large Scale Planes but these were all scenes inside a hangar with aircraft undergoing maintenance or repairs. I don;t feel that a box diorama makes sense if the scene is out in the open. but that is my opinion. unless you want to see how it looks under different lighting conditions simulating different times of the day.

I agree Brian. A boxed is more appropriate for indoor scenes. However, I still tend to agree with Ivan (and to some extent your last sentence)that if the outdoor scene is depicted in an "enclosed" outdoor area, such as a forest or jungle, and with the proper use of spot or defused lighting one can achieve an interesting and unusual result.

While we were talking of boxed dioramas, John Reid started a thread on the history of boxed dioramas here. Interesting indeed!
