El Torito

It's not the first time that you decide to jump into the bull ring and make that decoration that only exists in your imagination, or recreate that variant that raced another rally and have three different stickers, or "do the tobaccos" on that formula 1 that didn't include all the tobacco sponsors, or simply replace that decal that is right on the hood and got damaged.

We already know several brands that offer all kinds of "generic" logos decal sheets, and they are all at SpotModel: Virages with their wide catalog, or Interdecal and Model Factory Hiro with less variety. Today we have good news: El Torito is back on the market again... Great!!!

El Torito have now started to print decals using digital technology, all of them with logos in different sizes and different versions/styles, and we couldn't live without them at SpotModel. The only references available at the moment are Shell, Brembo, Sachs, and SEV Marchal but we will see many more in the coming weeks. Olé!!!

Carlos Sainz, "El Matador", has been chosen the best rider in the history of the World Rally Championship by thousands of fans of the championship worldwide and a group of specialized journalists, beating Sébastien Loeb, nine times world champion, proving that it is not only the numbers and the track recods what really matters when choosing who is the best.

This new victory for Sainz is really very special because it represents the acknowledgement of his magnificent career as a driver, for having masterfully driven on every terrain and surface, for his technical knowledge, for continuing achieving victories even today.

You can't build scale models without patience

Piero Di Carlo was a truly remarkable modeler: from 1936 until 1971, he was building a scale model of the city of Rome as it was in the 3rd century AD, following the directions of Gismondi, Italy's most famous archeologist, architect and historian. He started when he was 29 years old and worked in the model until he was 65 years old. That's modelers patience!!!

It was undoubtedly the scale model of his life... but what would have happened if Piero had been born in 1971? Well, without a doubt, today we would be assembling scale model cars, using the Mr. Hobby primers that have become again available in Europe, Tamiya tweezers with angled tips, the Echo Tech ultrasound cutter and the Studio27 decals for the Porsche 962 and Mazda 767B that have just been reissued... Which would have been the model of his life? Which one is yours?

Candy!!!

From time to time, in our civil scale modeling world, the debate about "renewal" opens up and immediately the argument of "everything is already invented" appears. Well, gentlemen, we do not agree, there are still many things to invent. It is true that some veteran brands have settled in and live by reissuing their old models, but there are new ones that bring a breath of fresh air and the desire to do different, curious and even daring things. One of those brands is Meng, who surprised us a while ago with several models of SUVs, just to announce a bit later a model in the unusual 1/9 scale of a motorcycle that was offered in both a "classic" version and in "pre-painted" version.

Well, Meng surprises us one more time, this time with the announcement of a new bike, again in 1/9 scale: nothing less than the beautiful Kawasaki Ninja H2 with pre-painted parts. In addition and as a complement, the figure of a biker girl on the same scale, produced in top quality resin, will be offered for a limited time.

Hans Mezger

He designed the Porsche 917. He was also who created the heart of the brand's fastest and most emblematic Porsches: the engine of the Porsche 911, or the Mezger engine as it is usually called, the Porsche TAG engines that powered the 1980s McLaren, even the engines of the 936, 935, 956 and 962... The mechanical hearts that give life to these gorgeous machines roar sadly today because their designer, Hans Mezger, passed away a few days ago at the age of 90.

The creator is gone but luckily we are left with his creatures, high pitched boxer engines, V-engines that emanate rough and low tones, and machines whose lines represent a whole era of racing motorsports. Crashhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Last Saturday and part of Sunday, we couldn't dedicate ourselves to assembling models because the SpotModel web server issued a series of puzzling "zeros" and "ones", something like 0110100100010111010, which translated into human language means something like "crashhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"... Our website "went kaput" and we had to put aside our favorite hobby to grab the wrench and fix the problem.

It was scary indeed, both for us and for all of you who tried to access the web, but luckily everything is already fixed and we can resume assembling models peacefully, and you can browse SpotModel's "virtual" shelves placidly

So, you no longer have any excuses for adding to your basket some of the Print Lab decorations for the Porsche 934, along with the different Shunko decals to use on the Lotus Ford Type 79 by Tamiya and Hasegawa, a few Reji decorations for the 935 K2 and K3, half a dozen El Torito logo decals, and Renaissance light bulbs. Dakar '86

The Dakar rally is one of the toughest, most complex and unpredictable races on the planet. Every year it captivates us and takes us to remote places where the drivers and their machines fight against the heat, the sand, stones, hardships, surprises and even snow, as happened in the 1986 edition, a particularly complex year.

Two of the motorcycles that participated in this edition were reproduced in scale models. One of them, the Yamaha Tener 600cc in 1/9 scale by Protar, has been reissued for a limited time by Italeri and you already have it available on SpotModel. Haven't you already preordered yours? Hurry up, they are selling out fast!

The molds are the same, the decals are the same too but freshly printed, and although the parts list is already interesting enough, it is very possible that you want to improve something with either the Albion Alloys brass tubes that are now back in stock, with the panel engravers by Tamiya, or that you want to use the new AK Interactive glues for plastic.

At SpotModel we have decided that the merit of riding this motorcycle in such extreme conditions is comparable to the merit of building it perfectly in 1/9 scale, what do you think? ;P

Salvinos JR Models

Kirk Encinas, Jake Encinas and Eric Ledesma are true car fans, specially about racing cars, and above all, about American racing cars. In addition, they build scale models like crazy. Dragster

Last week we wrote you about Salvinos JR Models and this week we are still in the US to talk about some curious racing machines, plenty of horsepower, blowers of flames and smoke, that roar prodigiously and look absolutely spectacular. We are talking about the dragsters.

All of us who have been lucky enough to see them race, touch them, smell them, and listen to them, feel a chill from the very spinal cord when we remember it, because there is simply nothing like that. Hairs on end, man!!!

Here in Europe we've hardly had the chance to see these machines in action, but we can do one thing: build dragster scale models. Since we heard the news, we have lived with the illusion of knowing that the lads at Belkits were working on the release of the MG Metro 6R4 kit. For their part, Decalcas, Renaissance and Reji have already announced several decals for this peculiar car, and a few weeks ago the book by Komakai landed on the shelves with an impressive display of pictures of the engine, interior, body and every single detail of the actual car. And today, the model is FIIIIIIINALLY in our hands

You open the box and there are maaaaany plastic parts (which smell divinely), several photo-etched part sheets, fabric for the harnesses, full color assembly instructions, Cartograf printed decals, and everything is deliciously bagged and ready to make you crazy with joy. For motorsport lovers, the elegant and suggestive name of Eleanor undoubtedly makes us think of one of Carroll Shelby's machines that, fitted with a V8 engine with TONS of horsepower, is an icon of American motorsports. You have to admit that you'd like to have one (or two!) in your garage.

If you are one of those who have a small garage, or have it already full of motorized machines, you can go for the scale version. Back in time we had the opportunity to assemble the 1/25 scale transkit from Scale Productions, which we had on the shelves at SpotModel some years ago, but it was supplied in limited quantities and there were not enough units for everyone.

BUT... we have just been hugely surprised by the fact that the guys at USCP are going to reissue their delicious 1/24 scale Eleanor transkit, thoroughly reviewed and now including enhancements in the bodywork as well as new resin and photo-etched parts, and that you can also use with any of the Revell or Monogram scale models of the Ford Mustang or Shelby Mustang GT 350, both in all their variants. WOW!!! We want it now!!!

We will have to wait until September to receive the first units at SpotModel, but you can already reserve yours now. Gasssssssss!!!

Twenty times happier

What is happiness? What is it made of? What makes us happy? And an even more complicated question: what can make us 20 times happier? Don't worry guys, at SpotModel we have the answer to these complex questions.

Happiness is the pleasant sensation that runs through our bodies every time we receive a parcel from SpotModel. Since the beginning of times, temptation has been associated with a delicious apple offered by a snake in an irresistible way. But let's face it, times change and in 2020 temptations have a much more succulent aspect. Here's a few!

Tamiya

Months ago we all wondered what was happening with Tamiya, they weren't releasing any new products and it felt like they were stopped, but all that was the simple consecuence of a number of important internal problems related to the management of the company. Currently, those problems have been solved and we have a new Tamiya that has been stepping heavy on the gas pedal, really heavy. They don't stop releasing new and very interesting products to help with the assembly and finishing of our models, they are launching new and really sweet models and at the same time reissuing old glories from their catalog.

This week they have presented the new releases for the coming months, and our eyes immediately focused with huge tenderness on one of them... Nothing less than the long time expected reedition of the Fiat 131 in 1/20 scale, this time with a new decoration executed with total perfection by the hand of Cartograf. The model will be available just for a certain time and in limited units so, as always, we recommend that you reserve yours, your cousin's, your friend's, and the neighbor's below.

The model will have the same original parts listing, which includes the figures of the pilot and the copilot, and there are already several manufacturers preparing decals and resin parts so we can make variants. Yaaaaaayyy, that's exciting!!!

Miracle!

Not to flatter ourselves, but at SpotModel we do a lot of things, such as hundreds of packages a day, thousands of pictures a month, answering tens of thousands of emails every hour, placing several million stickers every year... and from time to time, we also perform a few miracles

This time we managed to perform a great one. As we announced a few months ago, Tamiya re-edited in time and limited quantities the 1/12 scale model of the Porsche 934 Turbo RSR Group 4 sponsored by Jagermeister, a lot of them arrived to our shelves but there were no units available in stock for the people left behind. So we started the miracle machine, we sanded it a little and sprayed it with miraculous water "X-20" type and... Hallelujah, it worked!!!

The Japanese lads forced up the pace a bit and released a few more units of this model, which you already have available on SpotModel.

With so much X-20, the Miracle Machine needs a good rest. Or not....?

At the end of the rainbow...

At the end of the rainbow is that magical place where everything is possible, where when you are in the middle of assembling a model and doubts assail you, you can know exactly what color you need to give it the most realistic look, or to get the most similar color to that one on the decals. At SpotModel we get lots of emails daily with the question "what color do I use for ...?" And you know what? That in order to solve all those questions we decided to travel to the end of the rainbow!

Once there, we asked the elves if it would be possible for any modeler to know what paints are on the market that match or resemble a certain color tone, a reference picture, or even compared with a photo taken directly with your mobile phone. Since they are magical and to make it a bit more difficult for them, we also asked them to match not just the color, but also the type of paint (spray, enamel, ...), the finish (matte / gloss / textured), the different nuances (metallic, fluo, transparencies, pearls, ...), and all that of course focused on the world of scale modeling.

As you can imagine, the elves laughed at us and told us that it was impossible :-) So once again, we rolled up our sleeves and started doing it ourselves, and... tadaaa! Italian red

The world of colors is really complex. And if we are talking about colors for our scale models, things get even more complicated. Some years ago, only Italian Red existed and little else in scale modeling color charts, and with that tone all Ferraris, all Alfa Romeos, all Porsches, all Ducatis were painted... We saw endless rivers or Italian red at scale modeling shows.

But in the real world there is the Corsa 300 red, the Alfa Romeo Rosso red, the Guards red, the DUC01 red... Luckily, for some years now and to the joy of many of us, Zero Paints has offered us a really extensive automotive color chart, tightly adapted to our favourite hobby. Now the guys at Streetblisters stepped up and begun to manufacture their own range of paints and accessories, served in 30ml bottles so they can be shipped worldwide, prethinned to be used directly with your airbrush, and with very interesting color chart which they promised us will grow even more. At this moment, they have given a thorough check to the Ferrari color chart and also prepared the tones for different variants of the Peugeot 306 Maxi that is just about to arrive in Europe imminently.

That's the word that came to our minds when we got our hands on Komakai's new book on the Lotus 72E. And it's true that its two hundred and sixty two pages have impressed us, first for their volume and then, when staring at their contents, we felt in love with its quality and the amount of details it includes: those tiny screws, those little tubes, the color of that part, the shape of that hidden piece of the Type 72E...

Of course, it seems to us an essential book for anyone who wants to build this car (even in 1:1 scale!), to have it on the work bench table and keep an eye on it at all times. And if it's not in your plans to build the model but you are an unconditional fan of this Formula 1 like us, do not miss it because it is certainly worth it

Coming back

Yes, things are coming back from the old times when we were younger. Back are those days at home, those idle afternoons, and also are returning the scale models from back then. For example, the BMW R80 G/S 1000 edited in the 80's by Protar and now recasted by Italeri, the Peugeot 206 WRC by Tamiya originally edited in 2000 (yes, that's twenty years ago), the beautiful and cheap model of the Volkswagen Beetle 1300 by Tamiya released in 1994, the MFH Ferrari 312T4 released in 2012, or the batch of Porsche 917, Ford GT40, Ferrari 330 / 512TR / 288 GTO / 250 GTO / F40, all of them by Fujimi that are arriving at SpotModel's warehouse these days.

All of them are mind-blowing models that maybe you were not able to get, and that we have now managed to bring back for you. But beware, some of them come in limited units: either you get them now or you will miss them... again!

Maybe you have them all already? No problem, there are also a few interesting little things just out of the oven, as is the case with the MFH scale model of the Maserati 250F in 1/43 scale and the Ferrari 312B in 1/12 scale, Reji's liveries for the Lotus 49B in 1/12 scale or for the Belkits MG Metro 6R4.

All that matters is how you play the game

We have heard many times that "It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game", a big truth. Scale modeling is not a competition, building models is a hobby where what really matters is the wish to reach to go to the end and the ability to put the tools, the liters of glue, the sandpaper and the necessary paint, on top of a steady pulse, a 57x magnification glass, a bomb-proof patience and the will to see the model finished... to achieve it.

The progression in the learning of the skills for assembling models cannot be achieved without the drive that comes from having a goal and without constant self-evaluation: Have I managed to do a better clearcoating? Does may paint still drip when I use the airbrush? Why is there a fingerprint always when gluing a part? Do I really always have to end up breaking the clear parts? Why is the last decal the one that wrinkles? There is no point in assembling models without being absolutely sure that you are going to end up messing it. Because you know you're going to mess it up, for sure. Don't you? That slightly crooked side mirror. That wheel that does not touch the base. That torn decal. That metallic finish that ended up too dull. That upside down number pad. That steering wheel that you forgot to glue and you realize it when it just too late...

But those "trifles" do not prevent you from being happy, reaaaaaally happy along the way, even if your model ends up at the furthest end of the showcase. But when you nail it, when you build that beauty, with all its cables, its decals, its details, with that perfect paint, with all the nuts and rivets, ... Wow, what a pleasure. What a joy. What an unstoppable need to celebrate it in style! Let the champagne run!!!
