AdriaN wrote:its quite hard to tell the difference from this photo. i think its a mig23 because if you look closely the elevons trailing edge extends further than the exhaust while the su24s elevons do not.
so do the rebels have pilots or did they just jump in the seat and pressed all the buttons until they got airborne?
No , he was a yellow taxi cab driver from brooklyn going for a ride along the battlefront, of course he was pilot, you don't just sit in a cockpit press all buttons and fly, this is not a video game!! It seems that the rebels have got professional soldiers/pilots as well but I think they lack the resourses/numbers and a structured C&C..
Found this information on the Libyan Air Force

according to wikipedia, most likely it could have been a mig 21UM, crashed after take off due to technical difficulties, at least one crashed on 17th march. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libyan_Air_Force

Re: Libya crisis
For sure it was a 'Tajjara' ... that what the rebels call planes!
This is interesting for AFV buffs a make shift upgrade of old T55 tanks from Rebel Benghazi, updated with I beams ... unfortunetly one is already KO yesterday.
and this the Eagle that landed in another view ... both pilots were saved, the second was rescued by the rebels ...

What was glorious about the cold war ...it was just a waste of time and resources, as no fruit was gained from ... ah anzi the worst went to the CCCP!
as for what is happening in Libya I guess we know what they are doing, people are revolting turning into a Civil War to have a 40 year regime down and Ghaddafi and his hench men wants to hold on to their power ... no big mathematics mate! Let's face it it happened in France, England, it happened in Malta during the French occupation ... it just took ages to happen in the african continent!
So getting back to planes, someone over Times blog stated that it is not a MIG23 but an SU24 as tail is longer, you are the experts ...
Here is something from the hands of the rebels trying to fly this MIG21 another engine failure ... another loss of vintage stuff!
On the other hand strange enough all loyalist front lines do not have adequate AA cover, they know the coalition is on them and their convoys, tanks and artillery units are just sittting ducks, I find this very strange ... maybe they are up to some surprises?
And here is the nightmare of many Maltese, the old but reliable Scud missle + MAZ launcher and probably why we are standing on the fence ... captured in Benghazi!
If it wasn't for the cold war era we don't have all this variety of military objects that we can build today.
As a modeller and military enthusiast you must hail the cold war era!

Re: Libya crisis
Whatever ...
Yep I agree we would not had - Rambo 1-3, Delta Force, Top Gun, the A-team, the Wall, Puffi and Star Wars, I also remeber life in the Cold War era when we used to eat only Catch, Huskie, Diserta and just building Airfix, Italieri and ESCI models as Tamiya, Hasegawa and Fujimi were nowhere to be seen on our shelves ... was a very nice time to remember! Ah forgot not to mention 5 years studying Arabic ... all this the results of the COLD WAR mentality!
mhux ahjar tmur tlesti dak it-Typhoon hallik mid-dibattiti! Love U

Re: Libya crisis
I remember the catch and husky days, no colour TV, and the "glorious" abanderado and soldini. Thank God (or Allah in this case) I was lucky enough to miss(only just I think) compulsory Arabic!!!
See you guys tonight

Ivan the cold war started exactly after the second world war and not during the seventies and eighties !!!!
And yes as an aviation enthusiast I hail the cold war era. 90% of the leggendry military equipment especially in the aviation area was invented during this era. AND PLS DON'T MIX THE HASS WITH THE BASS !!!!

Re: Libya crisis
Antoine.. those are Rafales not mirages. Look closely at the nose shape + you see 2 contrails from each plane not 1
This is my video of them:

like euronews ... I prefer NO COMMENT ... BUT you should look into some referances to understand the Cold War as 70,80,90 were the turning point, what we have been seeing these last decades are all it's offsprings including all that happened in Malta good or bad ... You should highlighted I like the development of industrial & military design, science and engineering thanks to the Cold War, one of the best tools we use daily and here ... the INTERNET!
By the way nice pics send them to Bondiplus and Xarabank might they get uptodate whats happening around us ... as told you yesterday on Sunday I heard thunder sounds in the evening and surely not came from airliners ...

In your comment there's a statement that summerize what I tried to tell you and maybe I didn't make my self clear. "I like the development of industrial & military design, science and engineering thanks to the Cold War" nothing more and nothing less !!

In the second photo I'm sure that it is a mirage. The rafale is wider on the front and the intakes are underneath the fuselage not on the sides. I think they were two mirages and two rafales cause I agree with you that in the first photo two of the aircrafts have two contrails.
